View Full Version : RV9 - Questions about the codec

I`ve heard that the Realvideo9 codec must be very cool and so I want to try it out.

But do someone know a tool to encode with rv9?
And where can I get the codec?
Is this a free codec or do I have to pay for it?
Is the quality really so good? (If you compare it with ohter codecs like XVID or DIVX.)
Is the RealPlayer the only player for RV9?

Thanks everybody for helping!

>this isn't done with codec alone(that you can load to some editing >util),BUT with encoder application(mentioned above)

>it's free(dload producer from real web site, basic is free)

>yes,it's the best lo-bitrate codec!(slow encoding though!)

>realoneoneplayergold(freeware) is fine(mediaplayer classic plays >older rm files:but not these rv9 with variable bitrate(.rmvb files))

>capture.avi->vdubfrserve->asynth(filters,croping..)->helixproducer...
>this way you get filtered rm9 files(no codec or encoder likes noise >in the analog captured signal...this filtering removes it)

i havent had any problems using rv9 files in media player classic, I just have to rename them to *.rm instead of *.rmvb

U>i havent had any problems using rv9 files in media player classic, I just have to rename them to *.rm instead of *.rmvb

_seems like it crashes MPC on search(on first or 2nd seek attempt.....)
otherwise picture quality is identical to realplayer...
[it seemed to me that on older rm formats(g2,etc)it searched even better than realplayer]

seems it's not that easy after all..

[i've tried my rm9 files&some samples dloaded from the web...same thing_search crashes it sooner or later->perhaps keyframe lookup isn't the same for older & newer rm files(?)]

Still MPC needs RealOne player installed for playback, or am I wrong?
If so, it`s pointless to install both.
(Have no nerves to try monster Real proggy, so I bother you
folks here :-)

Thanks everybody for helping! (1) I use avisynth and Helix Producer Basic. You can get avisynth from doom's file section and you can get Helix Producer Basic from realnetworks.com

(2) You can only encode to RV9 using Helix producer. If you want to use AutoRV9 or rm9gui, Helix producer still has to be installed (or the old preview release CLI version).

(3) Helix Producer Basic is free.

(4) Quality is great, but look at Doomie's Divx/Xvid/SBC/RV9 shootout for screen shots. RV9 performs way better is some areas (overall picture quality) and way worse in others (smooths out rain and debris). You decide.

(5) There are other players that can play RV9 files, but RealPlayer8 or RealOne must installed first (because that is the only way the codec can be installed). So it is a moot issue, but RealOne is skinable though.

One question about the slow encoding with RV9:

Isn't it possible that this mainly results from the necessary conversion of the audio sampling rate from 48kHz into 44,1kHz?

This should take a lot of time and one cannot avoid it because every RealAudio codec uses a sampling rate of 44,1 kHz, even the surround codecs at high bitrates.

Baghira,

my experience answers "no" to your question: I tried to prepare a 44k-downsampled .wav to be fed to Helix, and the encoding time for one 90-minutes movie was approx. unchanged (more or less 8 hours on an XP Athlon/1G, 512MB RAM).

My conclusion is that I don't think that the long encoding time (in any case not that longer than the time needed for a DivX5 or for an XviD....) is due to audio downsampling.

Anyone else wants to share experiences?

take care

Atracus,

thank you for testing! :) It would mean that the built-in downsampling probably isn't of high quality?! Nevertheless, it is enough for my taste.

_i agree with this_my experiences(for instance vdub's dsampling&
realencoder->even without sound(!)) show that sound overall doesn't slow things worth mentioning.....
(guess you can test this by encoding purely sound & then see how fast it gets)
rm9 ISN'T the fastest thing to encode to......./at 352x288 i get round (my estimation) 5-6FPS....on cel600
