Hi!
I ran into a wired and very annoying problem when doing LOTR PAL R2 version about two weeks ago. The encoding went fine with good quality on 3 cds and so did the muxing with bbmpeg with no under/overflows. Used an avg of 1700, min at 300 and max at 2532, sound at 192 (more spec with the attached files). I thought everything was fine but still wanted to check. Loaded up the first multiplexed mpeg into PowerDVD and at first everything looks fine. But after a while I saw a little pause about half a sec, the audio was unaffected. This really confused me because this “jerkiness” comes back now and then in the movie (manly in low motion scenes). This jerkiness however is not present in the mpv file just in the multiplexed one. Another thing that is odd is that I’m able to move these “pauses” in the movie by using different start positions in bbmpeg, if I for instance use 0 sec instead of the default 2 the pauses disappears from one place but “moves” to another??? The same thing happens if I unselect scan offsets. I’ve been using the first 15 minutes for testing and some of the scenes were I see these pauses are when the ring falls down to the bottom of the river, in Gollum’s cave and when Gandalf and Bilbo are talking at Bag-end.
After a number of tests with different multiplexers and other settings like lowering the audio to 160 and setting the forced mux rate to 0 (use max) I came up with one “solution”. And that was to set the pack size to 2048 bytes, but this won’t give you real svcd compliant streams. The other settings had no other result than just “moving around” those pauses to different places within the movie. Also did a test with the four cd svcd LOTR DVD rip from the release groups which plays just fine. I demultiplexed it and multiplexed it again with bbmpeg with the svcd default settings. The result? Perfect, no pauses that I’m getting with my rip.
The sad thing is that I no longer have the original (returned it to the video rentals) and therefore can’t reencode the whole movie. I do however have a short chapter (no. 7) left that I’ve done some testing on (lowering max to 2482, using avisynth v2.0.5), haven’t had any luck though. I’m really puzzled and don’t have a clue what’s causing this. Hoping there might be some nice folks here who can help me with a solution. Guess I can live with the pauses but they are frustrating when you know that they don’t need to be there and don’t know why this is happening. Anyone know how to solve this?
Thanks in advance!
