divx 5 encoding, some problems

howdy,

i never had problems with gordian knot and divx 4. but since i am using gordian knot and divx5 i have 2 problems occuring.
first, the encoded movie is to big. its always between 704 and 707 MB large... what can i do about that, since i cant change the bitrate manualy with gordian knot.

second, the encoded movie always has a green bar on the right side of the screen, no matter if i cut the black edges away or not.
any ideas how to fix this?

I don't know about the first one, except to suggest you run the the second pass by setting up the parameters within DivX 5.02-VDub yourself, and bypass GKnot. But the green line is probably a result of using one of Tom's filters. If you use SimpleResize, GreedyHMA, TomsMoComp, or the STMedian filter (probably the SimpleResize), then the Horizontal Crop must be a multiple of 4.

Are you using the "calculate avi filesize" mode?

Because there's a bug for this mode and Divx 5 (theWEF himself said it is a bug, at least it was in Gknot 0.26). Gknot enters another bitrate in the encoder config than what you entered in the Gknot bitrate field. I found this out using vdubconf, a tool that lets you edit manually the Divx5 codec settings when using Gknot.

In the "calculate average bitrate" mode, there's no bug. But maybe you don't set the correct parameters for audio-overhead?

AFAIK the latest SimpleResize version fixes the green line bug...

As for the oversized problem, you could always input an extra 4 or 7 MB in the "Add" field (between audio and interleaving settings) in GKnot.

I'll try to help you on the oversize problem.

As theReal mentioned, there's definately a bug when using Calculate avi Filesize mode. GKnot tends to re-calculate the bitrate prior to encoding and it finally ends up using a bitrate different from the one you originally selected, thus the oversized avi (I found that out the hatd way :( )

After some hours of experimenting, I found a workaround to this problem :

Select "Calculate AVI Filesize" and set the bitrate you want. After that, select "Calculate Average Bitrate" and voila ! you are in the Calculate Average Bitrate mode (i.e. NO BUG) having selected the bitrate you want.

In most cases, when entering the bitrate in the Calculate Average Filesize mode, you'll have to enter a value of 1 kbps higher than the bitrate you want (i.e. you should put 701 kbps if you want 700 kbps), because for some weird reason, when changing to Calculate Average Bitrate mode, the bitrate value drops by 1 kbps.

I have managed to create many DivX files using this method and they were all accurate down to the KB.
