Solved...:)

With Windows 98 and linux it all works smoothly, even at high resolutions.

Only tried W2k and WinXP before...

i8XX onboard grpahics are odd.

They don't do proper overlays and are _slow_ - simply due to shared memory already. Get an external AGP card.

Next problem is I only have PCI slots...

I was thinking of buying a GForce2 400 with 64MB and TV-out, but it is PCI and the only one with these specs that fits in my machine which can only hansle mini PCI cards.

Will performance be good enough with that you think?

I'm no gamer, but from what I heard from my users here in my LAN they are satisfied with the performance of PCI VGA cards. There aren't many games around which swap out textures so much. 64MB ram on the card definatly help that situation, too.

Should be satisfying, at least video playback will be smooth (though I doubt that i810 performs well. In my GFs computer there's such a crappy stuff (with an celeron 466) and I can'`t stand that machine. Well, if the memory HUB runs at at least 100MHz it should already be a step in the right direction).

Is that a LOW PROFILE PCI card? (low profile is very small card with smaller mounting bracket)
And does it have a TV-out?

I don't know if it's low profile or not. It's still in this computer until Monday. :-)

But no, RGB for monitor is the only "out".

Could it be a problem that the onboard video can only do 24bit color?Divx usually is in 24bit, so there shouldn't be any problem. But yeah, Intel's onboard graphics chips are... no comment ;)

btw. I watch most Divx in 640x480, only very high quality rips with more than 640xnnn resolution I play in 800x600 or 1024x768.
I think especially for most one-CD, sub 640xNNN rips, the lower resolution improves visual quality by some degrees.

Yeah, those intel graphics **** indeed..:)

Even at lower resolution with smooth playback the picture quality is much less than on my other pc's with proper graphics.

Problem is I bought this cheap barebone for use in the livingroom as a mediaplayer and router at the same time. General performance is amazingly good but probably most because of a fast IBM harddisk with a lot of cache and 256 of "fast" memory.
Unfortunately now I have to spend another 75 bucks on this very hard to find low profile PCI graphicscard....
