View Full Version : BeSweet and mono Ogg Vorbis encoding

Hi all,

After searching through the forum for an answer to my question I am still unclear as to a solution.

I am trying to create a mono lame mp3 using BeSweet. The source is a mono AC3 file. Everytime I try an encode I end up with a joint stereo mp3 which is not what I want. Others have had this problem but what I am uncertain of is this a limitation with BeSweet (ie mono just is not supported), or is it a bug in Lame?

Thanks

Snilly

Well,

Based on some testing I've done I have to conclude that BeSweet does not recognize lame mono command line switches. In short the culprit is BeSweet.

DSPguru, any plans to support mono going forward?

Hi,
perhaps you can integrate the possibility that BeSweet can encode mono files and the result is mono, too (I know the solution with Monoto2Stereo Plugin, but I need a mono file as result).

features list of BeSweet v1.4 is closed. built-in mono support will be probably introduced in v1.5.

I'm trying to encode a mono wav file to mono mp2. The resulting file sounds like it is double speed, but also has a pulsating stutter making it unintelligable.

The source is stereo AC3 converted with BeSweet to a 44.1khz stereo wav file. Then using AviSynth and Vdub it is edited and converted to a mono wave file. It is this file (wav, 44.1khz, 1ch, 16bit) that I am attempting to encode to 48kbps mono MP2.

Here is a copy of the log. Although the log says the duration is 1:45:14.477, the actual length is half that (~52 min). 2lame can encode the file, but I find it occationally stalls on encodes, so I would like to replace it.

would you mind trying transcoding directly the ac3 into mono mp2 ?
(don't forget to include your logfile)

No problem. I used the original AC3, but using the same method as above I haven't gotten a mono wav->mono mp2 encode to work with any file I have tried.

I included the 44.1 khz downmix for this job.

The resulting file was double speed with a duration of 50:42. Even though it was double speed it did not have the the pulsating distortion present in the previous wav->mp2 job.

Ah ha. I ran a second encode, direct from the stereo AC3 -> mono mp2, only this time I didn't downsample to 44.1khz and the resulting file was perfect. Here is the log:

I tried a 48khz mono wav file to mono mp2. The results were bad, with the same stuttering pulsating distortion. And while the voices were high pitched, it didn't appear to be at double speed. Here's the log, note that it's a different source file than the previous test, but it was a simialar source, processed the same with the exception of the downsampling, and is approximatly the same length as the other file at just around 52 minutes.

I don't have the orignal source files, this file is of the same type and is processed the same as those previously. The duration is just under 45 minutes.

First I tried my normal 44.1khz mono wave. The results were like like the 48khz wav last time. It wasn't double speed, but still had the stuttering distortion and voices were very high pitched. Again, the log shows twice the duration and around half the bitrate.

Next I tried the same file without the downmix when transcoding from ac3 to wav. So the source is now a 48khz mono wav. The results were the same as the 44.1khz wav. stuttering distortion, high pitched voices, but at the correct playback speed. Again, the log shows it as twice the durtation and half the actual bitrate.

So it seems the problem is with mono wav input or perhaps any mono input, I don't have a 1-chan AC3 to test right now, at least I don't think I do, I'll have to check my dvds. I hope this helped, and thank you for your work.

Edit: Actually I think Azid decodes (or can decode) 1 chan AC3 to stereo anyway, so it probably doesn't affect 1chan AC3 with the correct settings.

I need to convert to 44,1 KHz to do VideoCD for my child. And I get the same hard to describe horribly distorded sound. So for now I use SoundForge 6 to treat the *.mpa file (Splitted with Dvd2avi).

But it's a pity, cause I love BeSweet for all other stereo broadcasts !

You'll make it, my Guru !

Thank you my Guru! Indeed it works now! So you had to change only the Hip.dll did you?
I'm not sure you really wants the log, but Guru only knows:

The output is still Stereo though. I guess one has to ask Danni Din to add an option into the "Output" dropdown list...

Thanks again, and give peace a chance!

Hi again
I'd like to know if Besweet can downmix from a stereo source, or pick a channel from a stereo source, to a mono output(MP3 usualy) ?

My primary use for this is archiving old cartoon tracks as well as commentary tracks.

Last I remembered, the mono switch didn't work so well for stereo input, but it's been a few months since I tried.

I'm curious if this has changed.

Take care
Tony

Hi everyone, i am a newbie here, so sorry for my pretty basic questions.
I am compressing very old vcd's to xvid, the movies are very old and audio is mono (it is 224kbps mp2, but left and right channels are almost identical) That's why i tried to produce mono .ogg files, but didn't find any options allowind to do this, Besides , if i try to open mono file (pcm, 44khz,16bit,mono), Besweet crashes. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Another question: I usually make Mode2 cd's using OGM format. Before i found out about ogg i was using .mp3 format for audio. I almost always had problem with synch ussues. Whenever i make .ogm file with mp3 audio, in most cases audio is out of synch, i used VDMod, Oggmux to make the files, no difference, with .ogg audio, it really works perfectly, no synch problems. So the question is: does mp3 suit for ogm container? or i just missing something? Thanks in advance.

Why isn't OGG mono support included in besweet?

What is the best way to encode a mono-AC3 to ogg with BeSweet?
I've read about a plugin for BeSweet for upmixing mono2stereo, but I can't find it. Until now I use only the Stereo -> mono switch in the Azid 1 section. Should I use the Dual Mono -> Stereo switch also.
I've tried to make a mono-wave with BeSweet for encoding with OggDrop but the resulting wave has also 2 channels. My last try was to use HeadAC3he, because I've read in this forum that a hacked version with mono-ogg support exists, but on Avengers site is only the stereo-version.
I love BeSweet and it doesn't matter to me, if the resulting file has 1 or 2 channels, but I'm looking for the best sounding way to encode such AC3s with this great tool

I use BeSweet 1.5b23

Wow, a lot of views in this thread in the last 24 hours. Thanks for all, but back to topic.
What is the best way to encode a mono-AC3 to ogg with BeSweet until BeSweet doesn't accept mono-encoding for vorbis? I know, that BeSweet basically supports mono2stereo, but I can't find the switch for this PlugIn. Is it enough to select Stereo -> mono in the Azid 1 section of the GUI or should I select other options?

I need mono wave file (48kHz, 16bit, mono, PCM) convert to mono ogg, but BeSweet does nothing.

BeSweet v1.5b31 by DSPguru.
--------------------------
Using libVorbis.dll v1.0 ( Dec 8 2005 ) by John33 (www.inf.ufpr.br/~rja00).

Logging start : 01/09/06 , 19:27:26.

BeSweet.exe -core( -input D:\capture\video\ska.wav -output D:\capture\video\ska.ogg -logfile D:\capture\video\ska.log ) -ogg( -q 0.200 )

[00:00:00:000] +------- BeSweet -----
[00:00:00:000] | Input : D:\capture\video\ska.wav
[00:00:00:000] | Output: D:\capture\video\ska.ogg
[00:00:00:000] | Floating-Point Process: Yes
[00:00:00:000] | Source Sample-Rate: 48.0KHz
[00:00:00:000] +-------- OGG --------
[00:00:00:000] | VBR Quality : 0.200
[00:00:00:000] +---------------------

The compression of stereo wave file to ogg works fine. And mono wave to mono mp3 works fine too.
