This post has two aims.
1 - to explain why i think i have proof that the card is crap and possibly put off prospective purchasers
2 - to get suggestions on where i may be going wrong (i think that unlikely though)
1-I could only capture with limited res with my old system (celeron 800 on poor jetway mobo win98se) using this card. I could get better res using mjpeg but still no way near D1 res. the problem was not dropped frames but frequent 'missing lines' - short streaks that occur due to a buffer maxing out in the card (a known issue).
I have recently built a new box (athlon 2100+ asus a7v333raid winXPpro) and can now capture in full D1 res with huffuv with only a few dropped frames but the actual picture is full (and i mean lots and lots!!!) of these short streaks. So the card is useless for full D! caps. I can cap at 384x576 huffuv(sort of 1/2 D1 for uk pal) and easily resize (although i think the result is a little blurry doing this) and get no streaks at all.
My point is this - this seems to be driver independent (old box - vfw that came with it, new box (brilliant)btwincap (wdm)) and must be a HARDWARE limitation of the card.
Now the big question is....
2 - is this a limitation of the brooktree bt9xx chip or just pinnalces implementation of it. In other words do others share these experiences with this card - do hauppauge wintv card do this etc...
Or maybee i am missing something very obvious
Comments appreciated
Thanks
