View Full Version : Audio gets more and more behind as movie gets on...

I've tried searching for this, and got all kind of topics with audio sync problems, but not this one.

I've got an avi, where audio and video is in perfect sync all through the movie. But when processed by DVD2SVCD (1.0.9 b3 in AVI2SVCD mode) audio gets more and more behind picture when getting through the movie. It starts out perfect but then gets behind. The avi and SVCD is both in 25 fps.

I've newer seen this before and I have converted LOTS of avis using this wonderfull tool.

Anyones got an idea?

check your "C:\Temp\Encoded_audio_1.mp2" and make sure the length of the audio is the same as your video file.

As fate would have it, I'm experiencing a similar situation to this one. I processed a captured MP2 file (from my Dazzle DVC-II), and all went well, output is perfect, and fills 3 CDs to the brim. The audio sync is perfect at the beginning of the first CD, then gets further and further out of sync as it goes on. At the end, there is a noticeable 1 (perhaps slightly more) second offset between the video, and the corresponding audio.

I've checked about everything I could think of, and read about every out of sync post I could find, all to no avail. Encoded audio and video files are both the same length, but the muxed files are out of sync, and obviously the images are then as well. Hopefully somebody can lend a hand :) TIA!

@ultimatedbz: i'm not sure what you're trying to back up, but are you sure force film should 'not' be activated? fps of 29.97 is uncommon for cinematic material.

@drfresh: are you sure your avi has 25 fps?

if asynch progresses during the course of the movie, then most of the time the framerate is off.

I don't know much about the VHS standard, so could the framerate be the source of the problem?

yes, it could.

so you're making a svcd from a dvd you made from a vhs:confused:
My guess is it all depends at what framerate the vhs was captured.

No, I'm making an SVCD from VHS that was captured directly to MPEG-2 video. And the framerate of NTSC is 29.97, so I don't see the problem  The video plays at the same speed and length as it should, I don't believe it was captured at the wrong framerate...

okay, NOW i get it :D

sorry to be of no help, then. :(

I'm VERY far from being able to give advice here, but lately the wife gave me a bunch of old VHS tapes(originals) of training material to back up . She works all over the globe, so, they were PAL of every kind and NTSC.
I use IuVCR. On 2 of the 6 NTSC ones, the result AVI was gradually out of sync as you describe. So, after trying 23,97(?)fps and other silly things, I forced 29.00 fps capture (don't ask me why, it was one of the desperate, shot in the dark tests I did) , and they both came out 100% fine. One was about 20 mins, the other about 1.5 hrs.
I don't know why, I just know I dood it twice and it worked.
Just my two cents.

UltimateDBZ

What confuses me is that the captured video/audio is perfectly in sync 100% of the way through. Things only go bad once the muxing/cutting stage is complete. Therefore I doubt that recapturing would make a difference, but I certainly could be wrong.

Any other thoughts, anybody?

After doing a _LOT_ of searching of the web, I came accross some interesting information specific to the DVC-II. Apparently, a default setting in the program installation (in the registry) is incorrect, and to make a long story short, this causes progressingly worsening audio sync problems in long captures, but only after the video has been edited (). But anyway, there was a fix, and I have applied it. I'll do a test or two, and post back results.

Here's the fix, if this happens to apply to a reader:

Open registry (Start|Run|regedit)
Search for SAA7114
Expand SAA7114 and look under AudioClockGeneration
Here you will find a reg key named reg3a with the value 9 - open that and change the value to 1.

Hopefully this post will help someone down the line who experiences the same trouble :)

I was going to suggest using a different muxing method other than bbMpeg. Maybe TMPEG?

If all else fails and you can't find the source of the problem, there is a way to fix the final mpeg file:

1. Find a point in the movie as close to the end as you can that you can see a single point of noise (such as a door slamming, gunshot, etc) and write down the time that it happens on the video (don't worry about the corresponding audio).
2. demux the mpeg using tmpge.
3. Load the audio into a sound editor that lets you stretch or shrink the audio file (I use Sound Forge for this).
4. Find the same spot in the audio file and write down the time.
5. Subtract the two times to find the difference (the closer to the end of the movie the more accurate this is)
6. Now if the sound occurs before the video you must stretch the audio by the amount of the difference.
7. If the video occurs before the audio, you must shrink the audio file (Soundforge does this by entering negative numbers into the stretch command)
8. Save the resulting audio file as a uncompressed wav file.
9> Convert the wav file using besweet into a mp2 file.
10. Using tmpge, remux the new audio and old video file.

Problem should be fixed now. If it still async but not as much as it was its because you didn't find a point near enough to the end of the movie for your reference point. Find a closer point to the end and try again. It sounds complicated but actually it is pretty easy.

Mac

@Mac: While that may work nicely, it's certainly alot of extra work, and the output isn't technicallly what it's supposed to be no matter how close it is. I'm much more interested in fixing problems, than devising workarounds ;)

@UltimateDBZ - I agree that finding a fix is the better solution. Please note thats why I stated "If all else fails". My post was more to help other users that were having sync problems and couldn't find a solution. I'm glad to hear that you solved yours.
