Ok, I know capture from my video8 cam and afterwards I deinterlace it with avi2svcd. To speed up the process, I want to deinterlace real-time during capturing. I am using smartdeinterlace in the filters section from virtual dub, but the result isn't deinterlaced.
How does this come and is it possible form me to deinterlace realtime?
My system is an athlon xp 1700+ with 256 mb ram. I capture 758x567 with the mjpeg codec with quality 19 (cpu load varies between 20 - 50 %)

There's a software called DScaler that does de-interlacing in realtime for some TV/Capture-Cards. If your card is supported, you can use it, but the quality is not as good as non-realtime deinterlacers.

But why cant't smart deinterlace work realtime, when I use it in the filters section?

some filters modify the timeline (i.e. filters that introduce some delay of frames, that vdub has to handle differently than 1-frame-in-same-frame-out filters). i guess this filter is one of those, and hence, can't be used during capture.

plus I think Smartdeinterlace just isn't fast enough to work in realtime.
If I know it right, the DScaler realtime deinterlacer is the same (? I'm not sure) as TomsMoComp, only in realtime the results are worse than if you're using it as a non-realtime avisynth filter.

dscaler has many deinterlace methods, from which you can choose.
iirc, tom has writtem few (many?) of them, and i think he also released his new mo-comp for dscaler as well.. but i might be mistaking here..
and, btw, dscalers rt deinterlacing is FABULUS!!! some of the methods are really cool and give amazing results.

Sorry, I only know one of the methods - that's because I couldn't get a picture using dscaler with my Hauppage WinTV pci in Win2k.
What I have seen is the new WinTV WDM drivers and they claim having used the original DSCaler code for deinterlacing. However, there's only one deinterlacing method available in these drivers and that one doesn't look extremely convincing, in my opinion. On fast camera movements, extremely jagged edges appeared that were a lot worse than normal interlaced jagged edges.
I'll have to try DSCaler again, but I have not much hope to get it to work.

Keep in mind that DScaler is for viewing only. If you want to capture you need to deinterlace and encode (e.g. to MJPEG) at the same time, and you have to write to the HDD. All together this is much more CPU intensive than real-time deinterlacing alone.

This is what I was asking all the time!!!!
Can I do this with my system (capture with mjpeg and deinterlace at the same time) and how. Smart de-interlace doesn't seem to work.
Dscaler doesn't seem to work for me also. I capture with a asus 6800 deluxe.

The WDM drivers by Hauppage with the DScaler deinterlacer (whatever method it is they chose to use from dscaler, I don't know) was using about 20% cpu for full-screen deinterlacing. That could be just low enough to capture to MJPEG at the same time.
I would have tried to capture, but the new drivers would only allow 320x240 in VDub, so...
btw I have an Athlon T-Bird 1500, 150MHz FSB, 512MB PC 2100 RAM
Deinterlacers other than that for DScaler are usually optimized for quality and not intended for real-time capturing.

The smart deinterlacer can be used realtime! I've a AMD Thinderbird 1,1Ghz and I've tested it. I capture with 352*288 and if a use the smart deinterlacer (I usually don't deinterlace it, because it is not nessesary with this resolution) the cpu usage isn't much higher. On your System real time deinterlacing should not be a problem. If it works with VirtualDub's internal deinterlacer, it sounds like a bug.

There's nothing to deinterlace with 288 lines, so a good deinterlacer has nothing to do (no jagged edges, so the threshold for deinterlacing is never reached).
Try it with full resolution, I don't think it works.
P.S.: I tried to do it with my WinTV card, but the problem is that any filter I choose only reports 320x240 resolution as input and doesn't do anything at all. That is probably due to the Win2k wdm drivers which don't support higher resolutions natively (I can only use full resolution through VDub's tweaking options).

I may be wrong but I think the dscaler team released a beta (alpha?) directshow filter that implemented some of Dscaler's deinterlace methods (the simpler ones I would guess); with WDM drivers and a program like Virtual VCR or iuVCR that lets you add custom filters to the capture graph you should be able to use it for capture. I haven't tried myself so I have no idea if it works.
EDIT: just remembered PowerVCR or some other similar MPEG capture program also offered some option for real time deinterlacing; most of them are DirectShow based so chances are deinterlacing are also performed through a similar filter: if the filter is not locked or need some weird graph connections maybe you can also use it with VirtualVCR...
