View Full Version : Any burn program that can force a specific writing speed?

I recently bought an LG 8320B CD writer. I just noticed that the CD-R writing speed is always at least 8x although I select a lower value in any burn program I've tried (CDRDAO, BlindWrite, CloneCD). I'd very much like to burn the SVCDs 4x so that my standalone player wouldn't have any problems playing them. Is there any programs that can actually force a specific writing speed? I don't understand why the heck LG has made 8x as the lowest one anyway:angry:

i have LG 8042B (that's x4 max burn speed), and it's always complying to my settings (i.e. burn at x1 / x2 / x4)...

It says in the drive specs that the writing speed may vary between 8x and 32x. It's really stupid, I mostly write my audio CDs at 2x or 4x so that my CD players will be able to play them without problems. I don't know if this is due to some firmware lock or something like that, but it's really annoying! Someone told me that the standalone player I have (Pioneer DV-343) should be able to play discs written at 8x, but I'm not really sure (I haven't been able to test this yet).

I have a LG8240B, the min. writing speed in nero is 8x. But with "CDRDAO", which comes with VCDEasy-Pack, you can set the writing speed freely. I've tried it with 4x, it worked ok, but I've not stopped the real time it used(to caculate if it really 4x), so try out please.

In CDRDAO, use the "generic-mmc" driver für all LG-Recorders.

I've tried CDRDAO, but it writes at 8x even though I've set the speed to 4x.

I also tried CDRWin (trial) which should write at 1x in the evaluation mode but it goes to 8x as well:(

Some burners seem to have a minimum speed imposed by the firmware - there seems no way to get around this (short of patching the burner's firmware). Did you actually experience any playback problems with your CDs burnt by your LG?

I haven't been able to test the results yet - I'm getting back home on Saturday;)

I have a couple of images ready to be burned and as there's been a lot of different opinions about the writing speed, I thought that there might have been a way around the limit. I'd also like to create SVCDs which could be shared with my friends as their players don't seem to like SVCDs burnt at higher than 4x:(

However, I'll post the results as soon as I've been able to test the CDs. Maybe someone else will get some useful info from this thread as well.

I've got an LG 8320B

Nero version 5.5.8.2
allows for the drive to write at 4x and even at 2x speed

don't know if 5.5.9.0 or above will tho

Uh, forgot all about this thread..anyway, burning at 8x worked, I can play the discs in my standalone player:)

@CryptKeeper: On my machine, Nero doesn't even have anything less than 8x selectable. I can only burn CD-RWs at 1,2 or 4x.

The fact that you can play the discs in your standalone player very well, is not the good luck whitch ONLY YOU have. I've tested the cdr with 8x burned in more than 36 DVD-Player/VCD-Player/even in very, very old HiFi equipments. All worked fine.

But - the world would be much beautiful whitout "but" - the reduce of of burning speed DOES have its advantage: in case of extreme overburing(for example, 82min-83min on a 80min cdr).
The tracks on cdr over 80min are very weak. I've burned thousands DivX-CDs/VCDs/SVCDs with overburing. Earlier I had a 8x burner I could burn 82'45" on Platinum 80min CD-R when I burn the CDs at speed 2x/4x. Later I have a 24x LG-burner, I can only burn 81'55" data on the neu 40x Platinum 80min CD-R at the speed 8x. But on Verbatium CD-Rs I can get more data - over 82'20" at 8x. On the other hand I've not enough time to burn all CDs at 4x, also not enough money to buy Verbatium, so I must live with the new situation(max. 81'55" data). When you only burn 80min data I've tested the CD-Rs at the speed 12x/16x on the LG-Berner, they worked for most dvd player ok.
