Alright, this question has been bugging me for a while. And maybe no one knows the answer, but I can ask anyway.

What are the chances that the upcoming hardware MP4 players will handle, say, a CD with an OGM on it containing an XViD AVI and a VBR MP3 stream?

Now what if it's a Vorbis audio stream in there instead of MP3?

Multiple audio tracks? Subtitles?

I'm a big OGM fan for things I'm not burning, but it would be nice to know whether it's "safe" to use for these upcoming players.

afaik, the tobias ogg implementation is not yet verified/confirmed by ogg ppl.

IF there'll be support (which i doubt will happen in the 1st wave of mpeg4 stand alones) i'd guess it'll be ogg/ogm with mpeg4 and vorbis.

if i'll have to guess what's gonna be supported 1st, i'd say mpeg4 compliant (divx/xvid) with mp3 (maybe vbr).

but it could also be that the stand alone players will actually be a pc-in-a-box running linux or some other os, in which case, most of the possibilities of current linux users will be available.

but that's just a wild guess ;) noting to build on.... just wait and enjoy your time in the meantime ;)

i've heard of a new media chip indevelopment by TI IIRC. The chip is supposed to be programmable for a number of different uses. Perhaps we will see ogm playing on one of these in the future.
