View Full Version : problems with sharpen

not sure if this should go in here or in CCE section, but, when doing a rip with dvd2svcd and selecting typical standard options, I have recently been playing around with the new sharpen filter. I have been trying it set to .50 for the filter. I am using the new version of dvd2svcd build 3 I believe and CCE 2.5
my question is, can the sharpen filter freeze at a certain point or can it take a long time. the last few times I have used it it stops at the same time (same time for each individual rip) during the encoding process and I have tried to leave it for several hours and the time would not budge. it is still using CPU time and doesn't seem to be completely frozen, but won't go any further.
if I stop the whole process and then redo it and the only option I change is unchecking sharpen and then proceed it comes out fine. it seems to vary on the stop time, on one title it stops in what would seem to be the first pass, another it stops near the last pass or 2. but with the same title it does stop in the same place.
I have searched and didn't find any similar probs.
I can post other info if this is too vague

Hmm.. never heard of such a problem before. A log will be useful though, so please post it.

it didn't seem like the ripping and audio stuff would be interesting for this problem, so here is from converting pictures and on

Hi
I'm not an expert but if you use those filters you think
maybe loading plugins to "Temporalsmoother and Sharpen"
would very helpful---AVS Begin---
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\SIMPLE~1\SIMPLE~1.DLL")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("D:\DVDifo\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
SimpleResize(352,360)
TemporalSmoother(2,1)
Sharpen(0.50)
AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
ResampleAudio(44100)
I don't see any Plugins to your Avs script?
cheers

OK, maybe I am having a really retarded moment, but I don't see how to manually load the plugin without editng the script file.
for example in
---AVS Begin---
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\SIMPLE~1\SIMPLE~1.DLL")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("D:\DVDifo\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
SimpleResize(352,360)
TemporalSmoother(2,1)
Sharpen(0.50)
AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
ResampleAudio(44100)
I am using simple resize and it loads the plugin without any intervention from me besides using the drop down arrow and changing it to simple resize. when I use the same drop down and change to bicubic or bilinear it also changes it without any further intervention from me. so either how do I load the plugins or why is it not loading the plugins.
I have tried all over that screen and besides editing the script file I have no idea how to load the plugins.
could someone please slap some knowledge on me???:)

aaahhhhh! the one file I didn't think to save. I saved all the other log files but did not think to save that file. guess will have to wait until next time.
so do you have to manually load the plugins when you use them like the sharpen plugin or temporal smoother plugin??? or should it be loaded just by checking the box???
because looking back I don't see temporal smoother being loaded in any of my log files.
so does that mean all this time I have not been using those filters even though the settings are specified and the box checkec.

I'm not an expert in DVD2SVCd, but I have never had to manually load any pluggins. I've used sharpen many times with success. It's an automated solution. You might use the search button to search for messages with logs, there should be plenty. Compare these typical logs with yours and see if the plugins are there.

probably a good chance that is my problem then huh :D
will investigate further. any other thoughts please post.

with my newest rip, same title as the last log posted, here is the ini. I have changed from simple resize to bicubic and it still doesn't seem to be loading the file for it.

nothing to load manually, DVD2SVCD does it for you I believe. This is not your problem and it may very well be your version of CCE.
However I suggest you deselect Resampleaudio and if that doesn't work (prob won't), uninstall and reinstall DVD2SVCD completely.
If that doesn't work, bicubic rezie with b value at .75 is already a significant sharpen effect. If you're source is a DVD, then you prob don't need to use sharpen at all. And for that matter you don't need temporalsmoother. It depends on the quality of the source, but I've had a lot of success simply using bicubicresize with .6 b value for DVDs. That said, using these is personal preference of course and sharpen should work.

even after completely uninstalling and reinstalling it is still not loading any other plugins.
I haven't been able to find any relevant log files. do you have one you could post as an example of when it loads (for ex) the bicubic resize or bilinear. defintily is still not loading any sharpen plugin either.
so now if I choose any other resize method other then simple there is no plugin loading. does that mean its resizing some funky way or is it still using simpleresize.dll to do it.
and other then manually editing the script file I don't see where I can add a plugin or specify location.
thought I had a grasp and now its slipping.
many thanks for any help

I must not have been clear. I dot believe DVD2SVCD loads any extra pluggins. That is not your problem. Simpleresize is not included automatiaclly in DVD2SVCD so it has to load the plugin. Bicubic and bilenear do not require it.
I'm confused why you are spending time worrying abotu a non-issue. You had a question on sharpen whcih I have not unfortunatly been able to help you with. Sorry about that, maybe next time I'll be clearer.
I'm signing off, good luck.

Just to clarify: You don't have to load any plugin in the .avs to use sharpen...
