I've been having good results ripping the DVDs, using DVD2AVI,VFAPIconv,CDex and the Virtualdub. Now when I try to open a file in Virtualdub, I get this error message:

Can't locate decompressor for format vfp (unknown)
Virtualdub requires a Video For Windows (VFW)compatible codec to decompress video.DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Play are not suitable."

I can still open mpeg files with Virtualdub. I've reinstalled all 3 programs, searched for and installed Video For Windows codecs with no change.

This is a dual boot system. Normally I use XP but it does the same thing when I boot in W98.

What do I do?

If I remember well, there are 2 things to install to use VFAPI : the executable AND the codec. The codec is a .INF file that comes along with other files. Right-click on this .INF and choose "install". Does that solve your problem ?

I've gotten this error before. What Jimmy Milner said just a moment ago is the correct solution. When installing from the Nimo Codec Pack choose the VFAPIconv option from one of those menu's.

Did you find a way to fix this? I have had the same problem once before, and I forget how I fixed it, and now i'm having it again. Running the vfapi setup program does not help. vfapiconv no longer creates files, and my aviutl also does not append multiple files read in order now either, which happened before with the other error. I installed wmplayer 7 and hated it and removed it, and maybe that caused a problem, I don't know. I reinstalled everything I had, from directx to my ati all in wonder drivers.

Obtain and run proxyoff.reg which can be obtained from doom9 I believe in one of the nandub or virtualdub software packs. I have about 10 copies of it in various encoding folders, just not with vfapiconv!

Run this then rerun your setup program and you hopefully will be fine.
