how to encode in cce to fit multiple movies onto dvdr

I would like to fit two movies onto one dvd-r, video quality is not the most important thing here but I would like the best possible. What I would like to do is put Rush hour and Rush Hour2 onto the same dvd-r. Using smartripper, dvd2avi, cce and dvdit pe. Any help would be appreciated. I have only done one cce encoding project so far using the guide on doom's site so I am just a beginner....
I also have scenarist but do not know how to use it. even after looking at the scenarist guide on this site I don't think I would try it without some help. Also I am only interested in the main movies and a basic menu page to pick them. no extras needed.

I believe the formula for authoring in order to not exceed your space on the disc is:

([Size of MPEG2 Streams] + [Size of AC3 streams] + [size of subs]) X 1.05


So if you follow Doom's guide for CCE for both movies just make sure you encode after your first pass to keep both movies at about roughly half of the disc (unless you're putting Braveheart and Austin powers on the same disc, then just monitor and adjust according to common sense.)

You'll end up with two MPEG2 streams and 2 AC3 streams. Since I havn't used DVDit I can't give you specifics, but you'll want to take each movie's audio and video streams and mux (combine) them each into their own title.

I guess there are two ways to make sure both movies play. One is to make a menu (beyond my comrehension level right now) or setup a playlist (when you author) to play the second after the end of the first. Someone will have to help you with that because I use DVDMaestro, not Scenarist or DVDIt!

in CCE rather than do the 'robshot' method, work out what bitrate to use (3.5 for ~2.5hrs on one 4.7gb disc) then choose multipass VBR and as many passes as you feel like (good one to choose is 3) and the other settings as per the doom9 article.

when its all encoded, you then give the .m2v and ac3 files to dvdit, i think you'll have to put both movies on the one timeline and setup a chapter to separate them.

If you decrease the resolution to half D1 (352x576 or 352x480) then you can fit twice as much on the DVD with the same relative quality but with less details of course. You can fit up to at least 4 hours with a quality somewhere between VCD and SVCD.

that's about on track, you could make a CVD (it is basically a 352x480 SVCD). the bitrate doesn't go above 2.5 so you can fit 3 movies onto one DVD-R. As I seen in my encodes and one other's it is on par with SVCD. Even using that res for TV caps is great. give that a shot.

Actually, if you are using DVD2SVCD, you are making a CVD (352x480) instead of a SVCD(480x480). The CVD is considered noncompliant as I have mine at 48mhz audio.

Here is the down and dirty process that I do. I use DVD2SVCD, change all the CD's to 1 and make the size of the "CD" 2200 (I can fit 2 movies on 1 dvd-r) Make sure close all GOP's is selected and use CCE 2.50 for a 2 pass. After I get the finally get the resulting mpeg for the movie, I take it (and another one) and load it into movie factory 2. I dress up the menu a little (have the screen start at the name of the movie) and then just burn both onto dvd-r.

Since the CVD resolution is DVD compliant, all I have to do is drag and drop it into MF2 and I am off an running.


On burning true SVCD's (480x480), there is an application that just came out on this site that does all the fooling for you so that it can then be dumped into an authoring program. I have never used it as I have burned all my old stuff on CVD.
