I just tested Real Video 9 on cowboy bebop episode 1 and I got amazing results! I honestly could not spot any compression artifacts. RV9 has a habbit using more bits on the foreground then it does on the BG and instead blurs the BG slightly (definately not as much as sshiq), but my solution to that was just to use a sharp bicubic resize (or neutral in some cases) which is pretty damn sharp for anime. I am getting a VERY sharp and detailed image with no noticeable macroblocks or compression artifacts.. I used a TemporalSmoother(2,1) resolution was 512 x 384, neutral bicubic resize..
the ep was 25 minutes @ 233 MB.. 25 min cause of the extra long intro, credts + ep preview.
for a 20 minute standard anime episode the file size at these settings and the bitrate I used would be 174.75 MB, so think of it in that respect.
