I have a NIGHTINGALE PRO 6 Soundcard with SPDIF Out connector, connected to my home cinema receiver.

I use PowerDVD 4 XP to play DVD:s on my Computer with the AC3 DD/DTS sound on my receiver. This works just fine.

But when playing a AVI file containing a muxed DD5.1 AC3 stream i only get 2 channel Stereo sound.

If i demux the AC3 stream from the AVI container to a .ac3 file, then powerdvd uses the SPDIF out and i get the correct DD5.1 sound.

Any idea what to do to get it work proporly ?

Did you install mpgaudio.ax from the audio filters package? If you did so, maybe it is related to your driver? There are tons of problems on Soundblaster Live and Audigy for example. I don't know your soundcard, but it's worth checking that, too.
