I've tested several DVD compliant MPEG2 encoding software and have found TMPGenc to be the best quality wise. Great piece of software. I ran a bunch of tests over the weekend with several AVI clips and converted them over to NTSC DVD files. After crunching through the numbers, I found that on average for every 1 minute of video that you're encoding, it takes approximately 25 minutes to perform the actual encode. So a 1 hour video would take over a day to encode. Seems awfully long. Is this right or am I missing something here??
Here are the parameters that I used.
Original AVI clip was captured in Huffyuv at 720x480 resolution, YUY2 and 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo.
Conversion was to a NTSC DVD compliant MPEG2 file using the 2-pass VBR method at 6000 average, 8000 max and 2000 min kbps.
Encoding quality was set to highest in the bottom pull down menu. No filters used.
PC is a 1.2 GHz Athlon using two separate 7200 rpm drives (one as the source drive and the other the destination drive)
Just wanted to see if other users were getting similar results.
