I've helped my girlfriend to convert an divx to SVCD so she can watch the movie on her DVD player (Panasonic A160)
I've encoded a movie using TMPGEnc and then burnt it in NERO 5.5.9.0 (both in 4x and 2x). I checked the Compatibility list on www.vcdhelper.com and her player supports SVCD if you burn it on a CDRW disc. I couldnt play the movie on her player but it worked fine on PowerDVD. I also tried to convert the movie to VCD and it worked fine. Do anyone knows why i cant tget SVCD to work?

Have you tried using DVD2SVCD? Maybe you didn't create an SVCD compliant file.

DVD2SVCD's the thing, man;) It's actually kind of a frontend for converting mainly DVDs to SVCD, but it can also be used to convert AVI files to SVCDs very easily. Just a couple of clicks and some waiting and there you go. It uses either TMPGEnc or CCE to encode.
