View Full Version : Would it make any difference?

I wonder if some minor changes to my sys. would make any difference in speed.
Currently I have a P3,733MH,384MB of RAM, Nvidia tnt64 video card, Wnin XP Home edition.
I'm thinking of adding another 128Mb ram, and getting a maby Gforce2 video card. (I know, cheap...)
So would that do any good?
The maximmum speed I get now, without any filters, is .630 If I add the unfilter filter, bicubic instead of simple and some borders added(if that matters..?),I get .430
So should I bother? I don't wanna do any big changes right now

Thanks

Your video card has absolutely no effect on encoding speed.

Memory can affect encoding speed but only if it becomes the bottleneck keeping your CPU from being fully used. You've already got more than enough memory to run CCE.

With your current hardware setup the only thing you can upgrade that will make any significant effect on your encoding speed is your CPU.

ahem. Don't forget one harddrive for the source and one for the destination. That makes a difference. Two heads doing two jobs is faster than one head doing two.

How much of a difference does it really make speed-wise? I get 2.0 speed on CCE. I have 2 HD's on the same IDE but never tried this method. Would it really speed the process that much? I'll try on the next movie I get.

probably caries from system to system. take them off the same chain if you're going to do that. IDE can't handle sending multiple ACKs accross the same chain.

How do you do this and still connect up a dvd and cdrw drive without having them connected to the same ide as the hard drive? Doesn't using a primary for the hard drive and the other for the cd drive slow down the hard drive access?

Having two separate drives on two separate channels does provide a significant increase in encoding speed. As far as connecting a CD/DVD drive, I wouldn't put it on the same channel as either of the drives. I was in a similar situation and just went out and purchased a PCI IDE controller card for $20 and attached my DVD drive to that.

OK guys, thanks for the information. So there's not much I can do.
As for a major upgrade, maybe later.
Thanks again

MAC: Some people have SCSI too.

@colebert - I thought about that after I posted. Do you think that the speed increase from having drives on seperate ide channels is worth getting another ide controller or going the scsi route? Right now I average a speed of 1.4 with cce.

I think we've got carried away here with the HD performance thing.

The speed of HD is rarely going to impact on such an encode.

Lets take a heavy theoretical encode and do the math then :)

5 gig vob file source of a 2 hour movie.
3x800meg SVCD output.
Total data to read and write 7.4gb = 7577.6mb

Lets go wild and say we have an uber fast PC which can manage 4x realtime encoding :)

So 7577.6 meg of data to read and write in 30 mins:
7577.6 / 30mins / 60secs per min = 4.2mb of data to read and write per second.

Every the current range of poxy 5400rpm drives around can manage that fellas, even with the source and destination files on the same drive.

Basically unless you have a monster PC and are working with massive uncompressed or mjpeg source your HD is not the bottleneck.
