hi all

I am a bit confused: I've ripped "dont say a word" from a NTSC dvd and made it a VCD
using dvd2avi using FORCE FILM , virtualdub and then TMPG.
I didnt use any deinterlacing at the process: just resizing to 352X240

how come the movie looked fine without deinterlacing it? every NTSC film I've ripped so far had to be deinterlaced - whats different with this one?

also, since this is my first ntsc FILM I rip - i am not sure - if I use "force film" in dvd2avi, do I have to use the IVTC in TMPG? do I *need* to do it at all? I read somewhere that 24fps VCD's look better then 29fps, but they are also more blurry - why is that?

I normally use CCE and Maestro but the easiest way I've found for IVTC with NTSC (NOT FILM) is to run DVD2AVI with field operation of NONE. Take that directly into TMPG and use the Inverse Telecine feature. I then bring the M2V file into Maestro and author for DVD. Not sure on VCD or SVCD what step you would use since I don't do that but the DVD2AVI, then TMPG with IVTC checked should be the same. You can't use all the standard TMPG settings in the guides since it's a different format (like the fps is 29 since it wasn't forced to FILM). Pretty simple and I don't have to use anything but DVD2AVI, TMPG, and the authoring.

However, running Inverse Telecine takes a long time and with 2 pass VBR it's a very long process. I'm running a Pentium 4 2.2GHZ and it takes about 1.25 hours on a standard 2 hour movie just for the IVTC. Then the very long TMPG processing.

That's why I like CCE (only takes about 1.5 hours for the entire encoding). Maybe someday when I feel like learning more programs I'll find a more involved combo to use CCE. From what I've read, there aren't any simple IVTC guides to do it this simply in CCE. Of course, if someone has a simple IVTC route to bring it into CCE let me know. I don't want to learn new scripting frame servers, etc so this route works for me.
