Second bin file too big

I ripped a 3 hour dvd into 2 svcds using TMPG. The first bin file came out at 824mb, which is OK and burnable on an 800mb disc. The second bin file came out at 904mb. I don't know why these came out different sizes since the lengths are virtually the same - the log file reports the first file at 5328.849 seconds, and the second file at 5376.522 seconds. I assume it has something to do with a variable bitrate - I was using "constant quality" in TMPG.

Questions: 1/ Is there some way to "compress" the second file down without losing any significant quality without completely re-encoding (which took 31 hours), and 2/ if the answer is no, where can I find 900mb discs to buy?

The reason that the .bin file is too big is because you used TMPG. As far as I know there is no way to compress ths file down. A SVCD is pretty much a compressed file already. If you do a search online fro 90 min cds you should be able to find some. Keep in mind that if you do find some then there is no gaurentee that your burner will be able to burn it. :(

Same thing happened to me but with the 4th bin file. I was backing up Apocalypse Now Redux onto 4 CD's but DVD2SVCD generated 3 MPEGs, 2 were 804MB and the last one was 1.4 GB. I used the cutter tool TMPG to split up the file and VCD easy to generate the BIN and CUE files. When I tried to play the movie on my Wharfedale standalone, it doesn't play the two CD's generated by VCDeasy.

Can anyone supply the command line for VCD imager so that I can generate the correct BIN file??

Download VCDEasy, a GUI for VCDImager/XBuild. It will take your MPEG files created by DVD2SVCD and create your BIN/Cue files which include your segment folder.

Just an update regarding my rapidly thinning hair! I ended up using TMPG to cut a two minute section out of my muxed output file. I then tried starting at the default (reset??) settings in VCDEasy and then burning the cue/bin file onto a CDRW with clone CD and virtual DAEMON. No luck but at least my mountain of coasters has stopped growing. I tried practically all of the different settings in VCDEasy and I still can't get the cue/bin file to play.

I then tried using VCDEasy to generate an xml file only and in DOS using the same commandline that D2S uses to generate the cue and bin file. Still no luck. WinDVD plays the mounted image after a few seconds thinking about it but my standalone has a garbled audio stream which pops and squeals and a mangled picture and it's the same for every variety that I produce.

Basically, I have half of Apocalypse Now that plays perfectly and the other half is one HUGE BBmpeg muxed output file. Is there anything obvious that TMPG's cut and merge tool does to the MPEG file that I am missing here?

Any suggestions would be mucho appreciated... ;)

I thought I'd take the time to post my fix for the 2nd bin file being too big. I also had a problem with the first bin file coming out just right, but the 2nd one being wayyyyy too large to fit on a CDR of any kind. I was using TMPGenc. I switched to CCE, let it do its 4 pass VBR routine, and voila.. got bin files that fit just right onto 80 minute CD's. Bitrate tab set for 695 MB CD size. CCE was slower than TMPGenc on my machine, but the results made it worthwhile.

Solution: Switch to CCE.

The problem is that the bitrate was not calculated properly, and the excess filesize was lobbed onto the final image. The reason for this is either using TMPG, or 1-pass VBR in either CCE or TMPG. The fastest method to fix it is to do a 2-pass VBR encode using CCE. You'll get near-perfect filesizes every time, and the encoding will not take very long either.
