View Full Version : How to keep the integrity of the menu on disc 2?

I've tried a lot of stuff and read a lot of posts but can't figure it out, yet, how to solve this...

Here's an example:

- You want to split a DVD9 into 2 discs.
- let's say the movie is in VTS_01, only one VOB ID (1), and 20 chapters.
- after splitting (50/50) we'll have chapters 1-10 on disc 1 and chapters 11-20 on disc 2.
- the problem is that the chapters of disc 2 are renumbered so now you have chapters 1-10 on disc 2 (pointing to movie chapters 11-20).
- the menu links are now pointing chapters 1-10 to movie 11-20 and menu 11-20 shows always chapter 11 (the first on the disc).

It's a bit confusing but is there any way around it???
I like to see the menu pointing to where it should be...

the latest version of ifoedit 0.9.3.2 already fixes this problem with the menus...
the menus work now. when you select chapter 12 in the menu it will play chapter 12 on the 2nd disc. which technically is the 2nd chapter on that disc...

Thanks Atreides, I've tried that but unfortunately the problem remains...

The 0.932 version does keep the correct chapter numbers on the 2nd disc BUT, after GTS Vectors and correcting or not the number of chapters in VIDEO_TS.IFO (in VMG_PTT_SRPT), the menu chapters keep pointing to the wrong ones...

Now what...?

1. Don't correct the number of chapters in VIDEO_TS.IFO any more. That was done only in previous versions of IfoEdit.

2. On disc 2, change the first play PGC to start on the movie title.

Now if you go back to the chapter menu on either disc, if you select a chapter that is on that disc, it should work just fine.

Sorry Snidely but that didn't work...

I've tried the two ways, either correcting or not correcting the chapters in VIDEO_TS.IFO.

I'm copying VIDEO_TS.x files from the original ones (as well as the rest of the needed files like VTS_01_0.VOB, etc) since that when splitting they are not in the destination folders (as described in the guides).

I'm not at home but I believe that changing the first play PGC will not have any effect on the menu problems...

That's exactly what I thought until I followed Derrow's suggestion and did it. It didn't make sense to me, but it worked.

Read this thread carefully:

I think drylook is talking about a different problem. the movie plays fine and the menu works but it is exactly 1 chapter off on the 2nd disk. If you look to see how the chapters are numbered you will see that it is one off also. So if you have 1-13 on the first disk, the second disk starts with 1 and then follows with 16 instead of 15.

If anyone knows how to fix this manually it would be much appreciated. :)

Yes, I understand. I split LOTR using Derrow's method, and disc 1 contains chapters 1 - 23 and are correctly numbered. Disc 2 contains chapters 24 - 41, but they are numbered 1, 25, 26,.....41. If you use the chapter menu on disc one, the first 23 chapters will be mapped to the correct chapters, but hitting the buttons for chapters 24 - 41 will always bring you to chapter 23 (since chapters 24 - 41 are not on that disc). Using the chapter menu on disc 2, hitting any of the buttons numbered 24 - 41 will always bring you to the correct chapter (even though the real chapter 24 is labeled "chapter 1" in the Ifo). If you hit any of the chapter buttons 1 - 23, you will always get chapter 24 (once again it is labeled "chapter 1" in the Ifo). This is about as perfect as it can get without burning the movie onto a dual layered DVD 9 (which obviously we can not do). In other words, hitting any of the chapter buttons on the 2 discs will always bring you to the correct chapter, as long as it exists on the disc, regardless of how it is labeled in the Ifo. If you relabel the one "wrong" chapter on disc 2 (the actual chapter 24, which is labeled "chapter 1"), disc 2 will not play at all.

The only other solution that I know of is to use IfoEdit 0.91 to split the DVD, and chapters 1 -23 will be mapped correctly, but now ALL of the chapters on disc 2 will be renumbered, and will be mapped to incorrect chapter numbers in the chapter menu. Take your choice...whichever you like better. I personally prefer the first solution, as the entire chapter menu works correctly and the disc plays fine from beginning to end.

Nope. The problem is that menu chapters (on the 2nd disc) don't point to the chapters they should be on the movie...

Well, I'm starting to think i messed up somewhere:

- on the IFO I get chapters 1, 25, 26,..., 41

- on the menu, hitting chapters 1-23 plays (incorrectly) chapters 24-41; hitting chapters 24-41 plays (incorrectly again) chapter 24!!!

hmmmm... ok I understand what you are saying. The problem I am having is that on the 2nd disk the chapters are still incorrect. Using your example 1-23 would be on the first disk and on the second disk the first chapter is 1 (which is fine because it will start the first chapter on the disk) but the next chapter is labeled 26 (whereas you would expect 25). I have this on 2 disks that I've ripped. I tried ripping each one both on a specific chapter and on the default layer change with similar results. When I play both movies the chapters are definately off one chapter on the scene selection menu on the second disk. I don't really see alot of people with this problem so maybe I'm doing something wrong. I follow the instructions to the letter though. The menu does appear to work well but if you really check they aren't quite correct. (I did check this with the original CD to be sure)

anyone have any ideas?

thanx.... :)
