encoding parts of the movie

Tried to search on this topic but could not find any relevant results...

I have a movie disk and I want to encode only parts of it based on the start and end times. For ex I want to encode the parts from

00:04:30 to 00:08:57
00:15:45 to 00:23:34
00:43:45 to 00:54:23

at one go
Is this possible in dvd2svcd? If not is there any other easy way to do this?

You can do chapters individually, but you can't set start and end times (to my knowledge) with DVD2SVCD.

UltimateDBZ is right. You can only select individual chapters to rip. If some of the chapters fall on the times that you would like to rip then you can do that.

The other thing that you can do is follow Gertis advice and try this:

1. Start your conversion like usual - ripping your desired chapter with the internal routines and make sure "Edit as part of Video encoding" is ticked in "Frameserver" tab.

2. If the process stops, presenting the Avisynth script window, leave it open and do nothing with it.

3. Now start DVD2AVI, load the already generated "DVD2AVI_PROJECT_FILE.d2v" file with "File|Load Project".

4. Use the arrow keys or the slider at the bottom to navigate through your chapter and use the brackets "[", "]" to mark only the part of the video you want to have at last.

5. Now make sure you have the correct audio track selected in "Audio|Track Number" (English is usually track 1) and set "Audio|Dolby Digital" to "Demux".

6. Now save the project with "File|Save Project" under the same name.

7. You now have a new *.ac3 file (e.g. "DVD2AVI_PROJECT_FILE AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY -144ms.ac3") and a edited project file.

8. Delete the already "Extracted_audio_1.ac3" and rename the one from DVD2AVI according to it.

9. Now copy the BeSweet command line from the "dvd2svcd_log.txt" file, paste it into a DOS window and hit ENTER. Now BeSweet should transcode only the part of the audio that belongs to the part of the marked video.

10. After BeSweet has finished, just hit "Ok" in the Avisynth script window and the whole conversion process will continue till the end.

You should now have only the desired part, in a half-automated step. But if you are using subtitles then you might have to adjust the times of presentation in the "PermSubs.txt" file if you have cut a part from the beginnig of the chapter (this will indeed be a little fumbling then). And perhaps it would be better to set "Movie offset seconds in "bbMPEG" tab to "0" so that the chapter will start without the delay if your player supports it.

Or, if you already have all your files from the conversion you should just run steps 3. - 8. and then start DVD2SVCD and do a "recover" from the "Audio Processing" step.

I only wish there was way to encode multiple time segments at one go... Is this a feature that could be added to dvd2avi/dvd2svcd?

It could be incorporated into the programs, but there just isn't that much demand for such an option.

Well, it would take a little time because you would still have to encode the entire DVD, but after the whole DVD is encoded, you could use BBMPEG to multiplex the segments of audio and video that you want.

You would have to set DVD2SVCD not to delete project files after they are used. Then use the BBMPEG settings left behind by D2S and set the time parameters in BBMPEG accordingly.
