Changing aspect ratio of an existing DivX

Hi everybody,

I have a DivX movie that was encoded with a wrong aspect ratio which stretches everything vertically.
Is there a possibility to convert this movie into the right ratio?

Most (good) players let you change the aspect ratio you want for them to play your movie with. Like Zoomplayer, BSplayer, PowerDivX.

Other than that there's only re-encoding...

I haven't tried it myself (yet), but couldn't you load the AVI into AVISynth, apply a resize filter for the correct aspect ratio, then just "Direct Stream Copy" it in VirtualDub without having to actually re-encode?

I don't know how the newer versions of AVISynth handle compressed audio and video, but it would be worth a shot to avoid losing more quality by re-encoding from DivX to DivX.

You can't use avisynth in that way, because it decomresses the video. So, you would have a very very very large uncompressed video. (Hundreds of gigs (If not thousands)) Wouldn't it be nice if you could store that though. Think of the possiblities :devil:

You would have to re-encode the video to premanently, but that will result in a lower quality movie.

you'll need to use resizing within a player to view it correctly w/o re-encoding. the best option would be re-encode, but if you don't have the source still, external resizing will be your only option.

Zoomplayer does it. its called Source Relative Stretch.

I think ZoomPlayer's Source Relative Stretch is best used to adapt computer monitor pixel aspect ratio to TV set pixel aspect ratio. For that reason I always use a Source Relative Stretch of 10%.

If you need to change the aspect ratio for a specific film, then you better use the "custom aspect ratio" setting.

From the DirectShow playback filters ffdshow, and I think bicubic resize, support aspect ratios. You can get them from the downloads section of Doom9's site.
However, I never tried them, always used BSPlayer.

BTW: Did you know that you can change the aspect ratio in Windows Media Player 6.4? Simply hold the Shift key while resizing the window. (No exact number input, of course, but it helps for previewing.)
