I havent been looking for the past 4 months or so, they were hovering around $500-600 back then but the prices seemed to have come down quite a bit since then. The Pioneer A04 was the drive to get when i was looking before, have things changed at all since? And has good quality DVD media come down to a reasonable price?
Thanks for any input, Ian.

You mean DVD-R/RW drive from BenQ and ASUS? They are all Pioneer A04 in the guts. They, including Pioneer A04, are all selling at a little less than HK$3,000.00 here locally. The local US currency exchange rate is 7.8.

in the uk the pioneer 104 costs £200 ($300)
don't expect to record at 2x.....2x media is expensive
and often won't play back on other equipment!

How long does it take to burn a 4.7GB Disc at 1X speed then? 2X?

60 mins to burn a full dvd-r
(that works out as a 12x cdr burner)
(but in reality I'm not gonna sit in front of my cd burner
swapping disks.....so it is probably as fast as a 24x cd burner)

2x......i've never had any media that works at this speed!
too expensive, too unreliable for playback in other dvd players
