View Full Version : perm subs over entire screen ?

I'm having these weird problems with the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, PAL version.

When selecting the subs, I can not click "next frame" (with 109b3) even though I can select which track of subs I want. I can however choose "next frame" using version 108b1. Don't know why really. Anybody maybe ?

BUT ! The main issue :
What it also weird, is that when I get to see the preview of the subs in the subtitle selection screen, the background of the subtitle is blue and when I select it, it grows considerably in size, taking the complete window. Before, I always saw the subtitle previews as plain white letters on a black background.

Apart from that, after the conversion I saw there were no permanent
subtitles in the movie, so I checked the subs folder and indeed it contained bmp images of the subs so I know they were extracted correctly.
While toying a bit with the Y-pos in the preview, I noticed the subs showed up at Y-pos 1 (DVD2SVCD program had it set to 2 for PAL...?)

So I ran another conversion with Y-pos = 1 and then in the resulting MPG, whenever a sub shows up, the entire screen is grayed out, only showing the sub, sub disappears and then the movie re-appears and vice versa. So I compared the BMP images of the subs to an other encode and they sure are a lot bigger (480x572 pixels).

Now I've been trying to experiment a bit with a single chapter to change the colour palette of the subs, that could be the solution, but no luck yet.

Maybe if I had a lot of time on my hands, I could also try cropping the BMP files with photoshop or something to a smaller size...hmm, could give it a try I suppose.

Anyway, should anyone have an explanation as to why 108b1 let me choose "next frame" and 109b3 not ?
Also, 108b1 is 100 times faster in showing the first subtitle than 109b3 for this movie...again anyone ? All tips are welcome since I don't want to mess with virtualdub sub filters or any other frameserving solution.

I set the y-pos to -1 on my PAL-conversions.
I have 1.0.9b3 and the 'show next' button works fine.
So please post your log and maybe also you dvd2svcd.ini, so we can have a look at your settings.

I have had exactly the same problem with several recent Dutch rental DVD's (eg. Serendipidy, China Strike Force) :

- displaying subtitle selection dialog takes forever.
- generated subtitle bitmaps are fullscreen (eg. same resolution as movie.
- blue and black colors are swapped.

1.08b1 doesn't have these problems except the last but that can be fixed using the pallette button and swapping blue and black.

I'll post the logs later on because I've already deleted them...
I've tried the method recommended by Titvs in an earlier post.
He suggested:
- create an SSA subscript file (which I did)
- edit the avisynth script by adding
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\Avisynth\VobSub\textsub.vdf")
TextSub("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\Source\mysubs.ssa")

I did this and it seemed to work great, only after the video encoding dvd2svcd reports an error "--10001.bmp is not a valid integer value"

Hereunder is the dvd2svcd subtitles file.ini

where do these --1000xx.bmp values come from ? I've deactivated the ripping of subs in dvd2svcd since I'm adding them through avisynth...?
It seems D2S used an this old ini file that was left in the directory from an earlier try, even though I deselected the subtitles feature.

I'll try a reinstall of D2S later today and post the logs of my "usual" encoding run. (e.g. let D2S handle the subs instead of editing the avs script)

I might add that this is the first time ever I've had this subtitles problem because all my previous (200+, all PAL ) encodings have permanent subs and they are all perfect.

EDITED:

after a reinstall of D2S I started a new conversion in the conventional way and these are the ini files created.
I stopped the process while extracting the subs because I saw I was getting the same large bmp files.

I'm going to try a new encode with an edited avisynth script to use the textsub.vdf. Is this filter capable of handling the </i> Italic codes found in the SSA file ? Earlier test just inserted these chars in the movie without putting the sub in italic ?
