calculating max bitrate?

i asked this question in a previous post because i was getting "bitrate too high" errors in scenarist. someone told me that the absolute maximum birate of a DVD is around 10,080 kbps. so here's my question:

how does one calculate the total bitrate? is the maximum bitrate equal to the video bitrate and the audio bitrate AT ANY GIVEN TIME? for example, if i have a video stream of 9,500 kbps and two audio tracks of 384 kbps would that put me over (10,268 kbps) or do the 384 kbps audio tracks only count once (since you only listen to one at a time)?

also, say i have a film that has 5 PGCs, as long as each PGC has video+audio that is under 10,080 kbps, i should be fine, right?

As I understand it, and (like Dennis Miller) I could be wrong, to calculate the Max Bitrate you:

Take your video stream at its highest bitrate peak.
Add your audio streams' bitrate' (Ex: 6ch 384K = 384K)
Add your subs

Then you get your max bitrate. [which cannot be over 9800kb/s]


Max bitrate isn't a cumulative thing. If your total bitrate for 99% of the movie could be 1K/s but if that other 1% is 20000GB/s your players probably going to freeze on the parts that max out the bitrate. So the goal is to keep any one second of any PGC below the DVD compliant max.

I might be talking a load of crap here but I thought the rule of thumb was to keep below 9800kbps as if you went above that a lot of players would struggle to decode it

ok i just burned a disc and it won't play on the PS2 (distortion, and then it doesn't even play) but plays fine on the computer. i figured it was the ps2 being a crap dvd player, so i tried on a JVC set top player and it reads but the actor's motion is not fluid.

do you think this is a bitrate problem? or could it also be possible that i incorrectly selected top-field first when it should have been bottom-field first?

i think i set the min to 1000, average to 3400, and max to 9200 with a 384 kbps ac3 track. 9200+384 < 9800 so in theory this should work.

also, i heard that selecting "dvd compliant" in CCE might push bitrates over the max? what would happen if i didn't select that? would it still be a valid dvd video file?
