I have consistently run into problems running IFOEDIT on my AMD Thunderbird machine while my AMD Athlon runs without a hitch. The main place the problems arise are when I need to correct the vob navigation in each VOB's. After IFOEDIT rebuilds the vob's and starts the navigation updates, I get an error message saying "vob read error" after running about 30% of the navigation updates. Running the same version IFOEDIT and the using the same vob files on my AMD Athlon @ 1GHZ it's smooth sailing. Anyone know of a reason for the Thunderbird to be more sensitive to IFOEDIT's activities?

By Athlon, I assume you mean the original Slot-A CPU? Afterall, a Thunderbird is an Athlon. In any case, I have no problems either my Thunderbird or XP, maybe you have some hardware problems, possibly memory.

The one I'm calling the Thunderbird is the slot A version similar to a Pentium 90/100 socket cpu. The one I'm calling the Athlon is the Slot 1 version similar to the Pentium II/III SECC.

I guess I should mention that the motherboard for the slot A is an ABIT kt7 while the motherboard for the slot 1 is an ASUS k7v.

Then let's get the terminology right. The connector that looks like PIII SECC is called Slot-A (it's a slot, the "A" stands for "Athlon" or "AMD"), the one that resembles the PI square socket is Socket-A.

But, as I noted, I have no problems with my Socket-A Thunderbird or Socket-A XP.

Same here. I have two Socket-A TBirds running with no problems. One of this is running at 1.3Ghz on an ASUS K7V motherboard and I use IFOEdit on it all the time. Are you using the ATA-100 interface and are you running the latest Promise ATA-100 drivers?

make sure your drive is NT and not FAT32.

O.K. I'm corrected on which CPU type is which. I'm running W2K Pro with NTFS across the board. I have a Promise ATA-100 controller with the latest flash and drivers installed. I have 768M RAM and am running at the default processor speed of 1GHZ. Still don't understand why the "vob read error" 30% into the nav updates.

I doubt it is related to your CPU or slot...

I have a socket A Athlon Thunderbird (not XP just thunderbird) and i never get those errors. thank god, cause that kind of error would drive me nuts.

maybe you have bad ram, or a bad drive? hmm

I had this problem and the solution was change the RAM memory.

I have to agree with mpucoder - almost all problems with computers nowadays are caused by a bad memory...

Try http://www.goldmemory.cz/ to be sure - it is a surefire way how to check a memory. I had to have mine changed 8 (!!!!!!!!!) times before I found a working MB/RAM combination...

I had similiar problems on my system. I was able to fix the problem by changing the location where I rip/ifoedit the movies to. I have 2 hard drives on the the same IDE channel in the standard master/slave config. Orginially, I was ripping my movies to my second hard drive (slave) because it's bigger, and was running into this frustrating problem. Anyways I figured the problem might be due to a read/write timing issue between temp files/system files running off of the primary (master) HDD taken precidence over the reading of the large VOB on the secondary (slave) HDD. So I decided to try and rip/ifoedit my files to my C: drive instead of the other drive. After that things started to work properly. Also I had recently upgraded my memory to 1.256 Gb, but the problem stil occured until I switched the rip/ifoedit location to the C drive. Also my memory checked out fine.

The error may also be the result of an error on the HDD (or any other number of things), but I haven't had time to check out my other drive (Though I have no other problems with applications or data corruption).

Just FYI
I am running
700 Mhz Athlon Slot A
Asus K7V (a Via KT133 chipset motherboard)
30 Gb Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 7200 RPM ATA/100 (Master)(4 partitions)
60 Gb Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 7200 RPM ATA/100 (Slave) (4 partitions)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response chrzan. Your information makes more sense. I've also changed where I save files during the IFOEDIT process and it seems to have cleared up my problems.
