I used it for quite a while. Long enough to realize that it is a buggy insecure software/protocol. You should not leave it unattended. I know of people who can remotely fry and permanently crash the drives on which you share files. As in no way to reformat and re-use. It will be dead. Also there is no way to protect yourself from this.

i thought of a private server, only allowing very few users with high quality goodies. i wouldn't expect these to try and hack my drive.
but u never know..

Well this is the first time that I have heard of this being possibe. Would this happen if you are using DC++ also. Also as
justin_case says I don't think that you would have to worry about this with a private hub. Finally Neko are you sure you're not just saying this as a scare tactic because you're anti-warez. Just Wondering.

but back to the topic: is anybody into it or interrested?

It is mostly a flaw in the protocol. DC++ should limit your vulnerability. But you will still be vulnerable private or otherwise. The biggest problem though is that to run your own hub you have to use the Neo-Modus software. Luke-j was building his own hub software but it to was closely based off the Neo-Modus hub. And to the best of my knowledge it is still not public.
I am not saying this as a scare tactic or because I am "anti warezing". I am against being a warez whore, but even I do some warezing from time to time. I speak of this because I and several others have had first hand experience with it. I lost a 30Gb drive. And when I went back through the logs I saw how. Trust me there is some good stuff on DC and there are some huge jerks out there as well. I know several hubs even pravate ones that were forced into giving the jerks ops under the very real threat of having their systems fried. There are better P2P systems out there.

Perhaps you could explain how someone could permanently destroy a piece of hardware remotely by exploiting a bug in (open-source) software? (DC++, but even if you were talking about "real" DC).
I'd be into it, but I'm already on a ubersecretultrahuge dc hub anyways. And no, its not running NeoModus software.

i kind of have the feeling, you pirated my thread into a technical discussion about direct connect.
the intention of it was to gather a nicce crowd (who wouldn't kill each others hardware, that i am 99& sure about, since i know the people here for a while..) and run a very nice hub.
this will surely not happen anymore.

The actuall DC software is not opensource. But as I said DC++ should be a bit safer. By sending specific traffic it is possible to have the software thrash your HD to death.

Then what is it running. To my knowledge there are no other hub soft than the Neo-Modus ones or ones based on the Neo-Modus files. What is it called and where is it at? This might be beneficial to Justin.

I am sure you could find a nice crowd here. But don't take your security so lightly. Because no matter how nice the croud here is. Even if your hub is private. The jerks can still find them and victimize them. Your best defense is obscurity and that is not so good.

Keep us posted. Sounds like a good idea. I just advise caution. Have you looked at running an e-donky server? There is more and better server and client software for it. E-donkey can provide higher file avalibility and faster transfers than Direct-connect. That and the guys at Neo-Modus are still at 1.0 preview beta 9 now for over a year. E-donkey is still actively developed.

I don't know how good any of these are but here are some opensource Direct Connect Hubs. If you want advice on which is the best I would recommend that you got to http://dcpp.lichlord.org/forum/ and ask around there. Hope this helps.

thanx very much for the links.
i just checked them quickly and i immediately found a linux-hub software, wich is great in terms of stability and i guess there should be less security issues with it..
i'll get into it next coupple of days and keep this thread informed..

i have been on dc now for almost a year, and in that time, have probably downloaded 350GB and uploaded 100GB. i spent the night on hubs all the time and have NEVER had any security issues of any type what so ever. though the rules on the hubs suck, ops are assholes, and users will often cut you off, you can find more there then anywhere else. i've nearly filled a recently-received 120GB Maxtor in less then 2 weeks.
as far as a private hub goes, that'd be great! i've got plenty to share

i sould be up with the hub within the next 2-3 days..
there was one link in floyds post with a java-hub, that runs under linux and i like that a lot! thanx again.

so, the hub is up and running. is there any volunteer for testing it out before i make it "public"?
i will be awake for the next hour or so, watching this thread. so if anyone is interrested in figuring it allout with me, give me a shout.

i'd recommend making it exclusive only to those who have plenty of quality/rare stuff, as in invitation only. meaning you can't just let any schmuck with ADSL 128 kBit/s upstream sharing 13.03GB into the hub. i think there should be some standards for users to meet.
btw, there is no reason for anyone to try it out. if you can connect to it, it works and that's all there is to it. it only took me 2 minutes to configure the interface my first time using it. this isn't an enterprise we're launching :)

well, i runit under linux for several reasons (gotta server in a room, where it doesn't bother me and usually its reliable), but there is a little issue so far. a friend logged in and couldn't properly browse my files, while i could browse his.
i shmock have the dsl-line, lol, but i came up with the hub-ideo, so i hope you guys won't ban me ;)
i made up a ruleset, i'll pm it to you. (don't want this to be discusse with 2 many people in a hundred page thread..)

status is:
13 users so far, still testing, though, should be up tonight.
if anybody else wants to volunteer testing, we will be on quicker.
