Must I have black borders for a svcd? I was just wondering what the point of having a wide screen tv is when all my svcd`s have black borders showing?

If you do a true 16:9 conversion with full-dvd size, you'll have the best chance, but sometimes even then it won't be completely full. That's just the way it works.

so basically 90% of people who watch dvd on widescreen tv`s watch films with the borders on!???

No, an SVCD is different from a DVD (obviously) and so are its' dimensions, and other factors.

Yeah obviously but with so many stupid aspect ratio`s out there on dvd, but what i meant was is it possible to take any dvd (whatever its aspect ratio is) and convert it into full screen svcd, without loosing the edges of the picture?

Sure, if you want to stretch the image out...

bugger if you stretch a movie to much you'll get an egg affect and it looks really bad. If you dont know what i mean try doing a movie that is 1.85:1 and see how it looks, it will be like everything is stretched looks bad.

Hi-
Your widescreen TV is 1.85:1. Many, if not most, movies coming out these days are 2.35:1. So of course there'll be some black bars remaining unless you're willing to hack off some of the sides.

isn`t it a bit stupid that most widescreen tv`s are 1.85:1 when they`re releasing films in animorphic 2.35:1 though?
Whilst i can grasp the purpose of having the extra inch on the left and right, surely it`d be better if the widescreen tv`s were 2.35:1 though? then we could watch films without the borders full screen and get no squashed or stretched images.
It just seems a touch daft because it effectively means having a widescreen tv gives you nothing more than the extra horizontal length, so its only doing 50% of what its purpose is.

They're made that way so they will work with standard TV broadcasts as well... CNN's Wolf Blitzer just wouldn't look that great with a foot-wide stretched head ;)
