i am using gear professional edition but when i try to burn to dvd-ram if tells me that no media is present. someone on gearsoftware's forum had the same problem and their advice was to update the driver set but this does not work.
i have a vivastar rs111 dvd-r/dvd-ram recorder and i know that it is supported by the software, but i think that the problem is that as a dvd-r recorder it has the drive letter G: which is identified by gear but it has a different drive letter F: for dvd-ram which is not identified.
can anybody help? dvd-ram would be great for testing and stop me from adding to my already extensive coaster range.

dick, just stumbled across this thread, did you find a solution meanwhile? If not:
I own a Panasonic LF-D311 which should basically be the same as the Vivastar and I too had some probs getting it at work with gear until I finally made it:D

i will try and tell you what I did:
(Assuming you are using gear pro DVD V 6.0x)
First, if your vivastar shows up as two devices, there is most probably something wrong with your driver setup. Try to get latest version from panasonic. Also, installing "Intel application accelerator" or the like can cause such behavior. You should only have one device. Now look into device manager and get the device description. For me this is "MATSHITADVD-RAM LF-D310"
Now go to the gear folder and look if the following entries are present:
File gcdroem.cfg:
[MATSHITA SCSI DVD-R/RAM LFD310]{RecorderType:MMC/SCSI}<gcdrmmc.dll>
MATSHITADVD-RAM LF-D310
MATSHITADVD-RAM LF-D311
File gcdrtype.cfg:
[MATSHITA SCSI DVD-R/RAM LFD310]{RecorderType:MMC/SCSI}<gcdrmmc.dll>
GENERALFLAGS = TESTWRITE | DVDWRDAO | DVDWRVPW | DVDWRFPW | WRITEDVDR | WRITEDVD_RAM | READCD | READDVD
MEDIACAPFLAGS = DVDR_4GB7 | DVDGENERAL
READFLAGS = READCDDATA | READCDMODE2FORM2 | READCDAUDIO | READDVDDATA | READDVDROM | READDVDRAM
WRITETAOFLAGS = 0
WRITEDAOFLAGS = AUTOINDEX0 | DVDBURNPROOF
DRVGENERALFLAGS = MODESEL_NOSETBLSIZE | MODESEL_NOPAGE01 | NOSETCDSPEED
DRVDISCINFOFLAGS + DVDINFO
DRVDISCINFOFLAGS - READSUBCHANCMD
DRVWRITEDAOFLAGS - WRITEUPCEANCODE | WRITEISRCCODE
DRVWRITEDAOFLAGS + NODVDFLUSHCACHE | WRDVDBUSY_020408 | SENDDVDTIMESTAMP
CDWRITESPEEDS = 0
CDWRITERWSPEEDS = 0
CDREADSPEEDS = 24
DVDWRITESPEEDS = 1
DVDWRITERWSPEEDS = 1,2
DVDREADSPEEDS = 1,2,6
DVDREADRWSPEEDS = 1,2
in my case the DVD-Ram was listed as SCSI device, not using the mmc device driver like it should. Furthermore the description was:
MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D310 (note the additional blank) so it was only reported as DVD-ROM. I changed DVDWRITERWSPEEDS from 1 to 1,2 so i can write DVD-RAM @ 2.7 MB/S
THat did it for me, hope this helps

I have the Vivastar R111 and it only shows up as one drive. It works great for me in both a WinXP and Redhat7.3 environment. For storing data on ram disks I just drop data using Win Explorer and it copies it right to the ram disks like it is a hard drive.
One thing I have learned is that it likes to burn Verbatim dvd-r but did not like the vivastar dvd-r disks that came with the unit when I bought it. Overall very pleased to be buring and playing dvds on my sony sx360 player. The real reason I bought it was to do backups on dvd-ram disks - very nice compared to cd-r.

thanks for the help
just installed winXP and the unit is recognised as both a dvd-ram and dvd-r but only uses the one icon for both. now gear pe will copy onto a dvd-ram.
under win 98 if i uninstalled the dvd-ram software gear then recognised the dvd-ram part of the unit and recorded onto ram media with no problems. obviously there is a conflict with the ram software.
haven't tried any new drivers which would probably clear up the problem.
