Help - Subtitles on Lord of the Rings

Howdy,

I'm trying to do a backup of my copy of Lord of the Rings, I want to encode permanent subtitles in English, but only the subtitle track that contains the Elvish translations. Only problem is that I select "English" as the priority subtitles, and then go to the option under "go" to see a frame, and it has the German subtitle, get another frame, the English one, and not the Elvish translation, the normal subtitles! Grrr!

Anyone have an idea as to how I can do this, oh and by the way it's the German version of the film.

If I'm not mistaken, the Elvish translations are hardcoded into the film, they aren't a separate subtitle, since there are so few of them. I could be wrong, but if I'm not, then you won't be able to change the language of those subs.

No, it is definetly all done through selectable subtitles, same sort of thing as the translations of the aliens in Star Wars Episode 1, there must be a solution for this, anyone else got an idea??

Hi Syden,

I did the German DVD "Lord of the Rings" recently and had the same problem with the German translations of the Elvish parts of the movie.

But on the German PAL DVD there was a special subtitle track (ID 0x24) that only had those forced subs inside no other subs - exactly what I was looking for.

Only problem is, that you can select this track only if there's a preview of a subtitle bitmap in the subtitle selection window after the process had started. So you have to hit the "Show Next" button on the lower right a few times until you can see one of those forced subs. Then select only this track and you're done. ;)

In the german version the first subtitle BMP of the forced subs was "Das Auenland 60 Jahre später" - might be something like "The Shire ... 60 years later." I did this DVD on 3 CDs with a 4-Pass-VBR and the result was perfect although the average bitrate was only 1712 or so kbit - but the movie is very dark and 2.35:1 and compresses very well.

Edit: Ups, just saw you're speaking of the German DVD version - hmm if I remember correctly, it was the subtitle stream with the ID 0x23 you have to choose then.

Great, thanks for the help, but, sorry to sound like a noob, but how do I select 0x23 in DVD2SVCD?? All I have seen is the language selection on the subtitles tab?? Do I need to edit one of the INI files seperatly??

Start conversion with german subtitle.
If the subtitle verification appears, just hit the 'show next' until your stream 0x23 (or what number is the right one) shows some subs. Maybe you have to hit the 'show next' quite often, so be patient. If you have the correct stream, just select the stream-number on the left and deselect your wrong stream and hit ok to stárt your conversion.
