AVI information / uninstall

I once had a program called AVI information installed on my computer (with Windows XP)- or something like that. Among other things, it added a new choice in the menu when you right click on a AVI file in Explorer - that new selection being AVI Information. I no longer have the setup files, and it is a known problem with the code that it doesn't work with Windows XP / 2000. So... I tried to uninstall it, and... it uninstalled okay, but the AVI Information selection is still there, in the menu. I tried rebooting, but even after, it was still there. And when I click on it, whereas before, a window for AVI information would come up (and crash), now I get a message that says this:

Windows cannot find AVInfo.exe.

This program is needed for opening files of type 'Video Clip'.

I can't reinstall it, and play around with varrious methods of removing it, so... I'm stuck. Can I edit it out of system.ini of win.ini (if those are still in Windows)? Is there some registry setting which I could edit?

Can't tell you about getting it off of your context menu (minor problem), but you seem to be indicating that XP has set AVIinfo as a default opener for AVI files. That is a big problem.

Do a search for a program called WAssociate. I honestly don't know if it works with XP, but if it does, it will allow you to reset that (or any other) default association. [For example, you could reset it to WMP or VDub or whatever else.] I don't recall where I got that program (freeware) from, but I commonly use completelyfreesoftware, simtel, c/net, and zdnet when I'm looking for software. Chances are you'll find it on one of those.

P.S. AVIinfo doesn't crash my 98SE O/S, but it does crash itself twice everytime I close it. Merely a minor disturbance for me however.

XP only gives that error when I try to open it *with* the menu option that AVIinfo added. If I double click on it, it loads up in WMP8 just fine. But... never the less, that does sound like a useful program! I'll have to keep on the look out for it! :)
As for it crashing... iirc, that's a known issue with XP (although, iirc, I didn't know about it until after I installed it). I got another program, however, that changes the frame rate without messing around with the registry, or whatever it is that AVIinfo messed around with to get that extra menu option added...
