tried searching but it come up with a load of DVD-R topics,

anyway, ive got the Pioneer AO3, burns DVD-RS fine, some dvd-r incompatibility problems with some standalone players, now ive got a chance to get a DVD+R/W burner (cant remember what make it is, its 4x burning) now i was under the impression that DVD+Rs were incompatible with PS2 dvd player and standalone dvd players,

now before i shell out my cash on it, whats the deal, DO DVD+Rs play on standalone/ps2/pc? or dont they, ive seen so many conflicting views im lost ;/

Which burner gives 4x speed? I haven't seen a single drive over 2.4x burning speed. For that matter, where would you get the media that burns at 4x?

I have a dvd+r/rw. The +r discs seem to work fine on my ps2. The +rw dics only work about 50% of the time.

4X Drives are the next generation, current generation are 2.4X, so it takes you ~23min to burn a disc (1X: ~57min & 2X: ~28min).
For compatibility, all PS2 are compatible with both -R and +R. For -RW & +RW, only the 5th generation of PS2 is OK. The previous generations won't read 95% of these discs.

There is an excellent list on this page:

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/compatibilitylist_dvdvideo.html

Please also remember to read the page about the Compatibility Bitsetting, which you find here:

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html

Many people with DVD+RW drives seem to be unaware of this bitsetting.
The problem is that a disk that plays fine without the compatibility setting in one player, might not play with the compatibility bit set on another drive. It's not a major problem, since the disk is RW, and the bit setting can be changed without having to burn the DVD again.

I have both DVD-RW and DVD+RW and I'm very happy with DVD+RW. It seems that the compatibility is better. I never deal with DVD-R and DVD+R though, so I dont have an opinion on these. The main drawback is that the price of DVD+RW media is usually higher (than DVD-RW). The cheapest you can find (that I know of) right now, is $3.45 per disk for +RW.

I've got a Ricoh +RW and it's brilliant with compatability, speed and error free both burning and using on standalone players.
