is this what slows me down

i think that my hd is slowing me down when i encode

it is a seagate 80 gb 5400 rpm

i think i will bye a hd whit 7200 rpm and what is the best solution

to put my os on the 7200 rpm disk

and use my 5400 rpm disk for the target disk



or
my os on the 5400 rpm disk and the 7200 rpm for the output from cce

768 mb sdram
encode speed 0.9
os xp home

You don't need a 7200 hd.

But it is true that encoding from and to the same hd is slower than encoding from one hd to another.

I have two 5400 hd in my system and I can capture fully with huffyuv f.e. and so on.
So no need for a hd which spins faster. It only will be louder and hotter.

The only advantage of a 7200 hd could be (needn't to be) faster access time on multiple smallest files.

I must disagree. Having a 7200 hd improves your overall PC performance in so many ways. Startup is faster, programs start faster, and everything that uses your HD runs about 1/3 faster. Encoding? well, I never encoded on a 5400 hd so I have nothing to compare it to.

Also...

Western Digital just released a "special edition" version of it's hd's that feature an 8 mb buffer. I don't know how much this would really help, but if you're springing for a new one, you may want to try it out (you could always return it if you aren't satisfied!).

i have a WD1000JB (7200 rpm 8mb cache) and it does help alot in normal use (i get to work and wonder what the hell is wrong with it its that slow)

BUT, when encoding, especially to MPEG-2, the hdd speed isnt going to make that much difference mainly cause the cpu will be the limit at the moment.

most 7200rpm drives can transfer over 33mbytes/sec these days, which if you were to work out how much video that translates to be:

using UNCOMPRESSED PAL or NTSC D-1 with 48khz/16-bit/Stereo that is less than 30mbytes/sec, which i think almost noone is using uncompressed as source, DV is 3.6mbytes/sec, and so getting a faster drive will only help cause it doesnt have to seek to the part for the reading, then seek to the part to write, but apart from that, if you need more hdd space, by all means get a 7200, as mentioned before, it helps in overall system speed, capturing and if you want and have the money get the 8mb WD, they are very nice.

i see your using a P4 with SDRAM, which is the slowest P4 platform.

the P4 is built for high memory bandwith, which might be your speed problem (i get ~.9 in CCE with my ~900 Duron w/DDR SDRAM)

switching memory will be dependant on the motherboard, which basically means you'll have to swap motherboard, which will mean a reinstall) or repair install of XP if you do, so at the moment id sit tight if i were you. (unless that 1800 of yours is a 1.8A, then i would try running it at 533fsb and see what happens)

That's not true. I have xp and when I installed my new mobo (asus kv7333)I didn't have to adjust anything. I just booted up and it was found.

newer P4 processors with a new core and more L2 cache (512) start at 2ghz, but intel released a 1.6 and 1.8 version of it two, which will overclock to 533fsb easily.

obviously if you were confused by my previous post, then you most probably dont have one, to confirm it grab a copy of wcpuid (www.h-oda.com) and save a bmp of the first screen.

I too have an 8mb cache 80gb Western Digital (7200rpm), and it is very nice. I also run two 80gb IBMs (2mb cache; 7200rpm) and I must say there is very little to choose between them in terms of performance. The W-D is quieter than the IBMs, but then that's no big deal. I can wholeheartedly recommend either of these drives, since they perform beautifully and are excellent quality. The 80gb IBMs are particularly good value on w*w.eBuyer.com at the moment (I got my W-D from eBuyer, but it cost me more than the IBMs). It is unbelievable that you can get IBM quality at LESS than £1 per gig at the moment! :)

and i got a speed with cce 2.5 from 1.3

owjeahh my cpu is now one that runs on a 400 mhz bus next week i change him with one that runs on a 533 bus wil my speed goes up or not ??
