I have a PAL DVD-R which doesn't play on my pioneer 343 and I would like to know how to convert it to NTSC.

This IS possible, but I would suggest that you avoid this hassle if at all possible. The process is fraught with problems and the end result of an NTSC to PAL (or Vice-versa) conversion is never perfect (well, not unless you use about $100,000 of transcoding hardware). Is your material really that vitally important? Don't be disheartened if it is - it's just that you'll need a lot of patience and will have to accept an imperfect end result.

if it simply 'doesnt play' then its probably a region problem, not a video standards problem (PAL video played back on a NTSC tv comes out in B&W, and vice versa).

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe the "Black & White" playback issue is to do with PAL TVs expecting a 50hz input, and NTSC expecting 60hz input. Sony televisions are renowned for accepting BOTH as standard, which is a damn good reason for buying Sony if you ask me! (Sadly, I have a Panasonic... lol! :( )

im not sure exactly why you get B&W with the wrong TV standard, i just know thats what you get ;)
panasonic is good, i think all panasonics that are less than 2yr old do PAL and NTSC, altho the panasonic VCR we have (same age as the TV) wont let me watch NTSC tapes in NTSC :(

Maybe in Europe, but certainly not in the U.S.You can't find a television set that can display Pal anywhere in a regular electronics store only specialty stores or internet. As far as color, the subcarrier color signal is handled with different technology with Pal(one of the major improvements over Never Twice the Same Color)

B&W is because you connect composite video output, change to component and see what happens!

well, thats interesting seeing as im only using the y/c connection :)
but yes you can get B&W by connecting one of the component connections to a composite input, but (and a tv that you can force a tv standard on helps here) give a normal NTSC signal to a PAL only TV, and you get B&W, and vice versa.
