smart ripper dvd genie and dvd burner buying

ive have smart ripper and dvd genie but dont have a burner to use them on and im curious can smart ripper take the image of a dvd without any conversion or editing needed and burn it on to another dvd menus and features (subtitles and dubs etc.) all intact plus with the assistance of dvd genie can i do this with dvds of other areas or make them region free last im looking at an hp200i but may hold out for one of these 4x dvd burners i hear rumors about http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-948963.html answers and advice are much appreciated thx

if it's a DVD-5 you can create an image of the DVD using DVD Decrypter, then burn it on a DVD-R (or DVD+R) using DVD Decrypter.. the program can also remove region protection that is on the discs. If the disc is a DVD-9 (dual layer) the process gets much more complicated.. please have a look at http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm to see what it takes.

you were asking about smartripper.. also possible for a dvd-5 but I consider making an iso image and burning it again as the safer method. DVD Genie is a playback tool for software DVD players so you can't remove region protection on DVDs with it.

so the only thing i dont understand is are dvds that you buy in the store encoded differently or are they just on a disc that can store more but in the end most likely quality and or features will be lost due to conversion compression and limitations on current technology available to the pubilc it seems freedom is still a paradox tango

The dvd you buy in the store is a "pressed" dvd, it has 2 layers of 4.7 gigs each.

The dvd's we work with are "recorded" dvd, single layer, 4.7 gigs.

We have to "rip" the movie out and in most cases "shrink" it to fit on a 4.7 gig DVD disk.

It's an easy process once you've spent a month or two reading the guides over and over, day after day. It takes time to learn.

It's easy once you figure it out, until then it is very frustrating!
