I am exporting interlaced PAL DV footage from Premiere, frameserving it to TMPGenc Plus 2.57, and converting to NTSC MPEG-2 for DVD. The result is clear, but it is a bit jumpy. At times a bit like looking through a flipbook, as if the famerate is much slower. Not pleasant to watch.

I am using high quality (slow), CBR 8000kb/s, interlace in, interlace out, DC component precision 10bits.

Is there any way to make it smoother? Should I be resizing and changing the framerate another way before the footage reaches TMPGenc?

thanks,

Nick

Canopus makes a software DV format converter that can do PAL/NTSC conversions on the DV files. Don't know how good it is though.

There are also some plugins for AfterFX which can do the same thing. You could try deinterlacing the vid, and compress it down to 24fps to make it progressive scan, but hard to say what the motion would look like.

High quality NTSC/PAL conversions are still a somewhat arcane (and expensive) art.
