I am new to the DVD burning game, but have managed to rip 'n' burn many of my dvds. I would now like to put some of my DivX collection onto DVD-R so that i can watch them on a decent TV.
I dont really want to have (s)VCD, so whats the best route to take to convert my AVI's to DVD
Just let a DVD authorr convert and burn (spruceUp)?
or convert the AVI with specialist software (VDub, TMPG), then author the MPeg.
Any advice would be gratefull.
Thanks

What im doing at the moment is saving the .wav file from the AVI in VDub then encoding the avi with the wav in TMPGEnc using a DVD template. Half way through the encoding process i get an error (something about line out of range?) ill have to make a note of it next time. This has happened on a few now and i still havn't managed to get one single DIVx onto DVD.
I dont want to keep trying incase im doing something obviously wrong.
Im running XP Pro on a P4 1.6 Gig, 512Mb RAM.
Please Help!

You need to decode the sound to .wav
When you extract the sound in VDub, it just has the extension .wav
It in fact could be an ac3, mp3, ogg, etc.
Just rename the file to the correct one and decode it to .wav later.
Should solve that problem. Post more on the error message.

how do i find out if it should be ac3, mp3, ogg etc?
When extracted from the avi do i need to convert it to wav before encoding in TMPGEnc, if so what program will do this?
Thanks

Open .avi in VDub and/or NDub and goto file/file information.
If you have the audio codec installed it will be listed in here.
So, for example, it says "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec", it's a mp3 soundtrack. Rename to *.mp3, or whatever.
Then decode to a PCM wave with Besweet, Razorlame, etc.
Hope this helps.

Just to make sure im getting this correct i will write down my steps.
1. open the video file in Vdub
2. i change the audio to full processing mode, cos i complains of an improper VBR
3. save WAV
Now your saying change the extension to Mp3 (which is what it is)
When i do that the file doesn'r play anymore in winamp, but did asa wav file.
Your advice make perfect sense but my stupidity wont let me take it, am i doing something wrong in these first steps.
Sorry to be soooo annoying.

No problem.
Your better to open it in Nandub (won't complain about the VBR sound)
Now, DON'T enable full processing mode. This will modify the sound. U want to extract it to be 100% original. Use direct stream copy.
So,
1. Open file in Nandub.
2. File/save wav.
3. Rename file to *.mp3
4. Decode to *.wav.
Hope this helps.

Hi Why not
Open avi in Virtualdub
go to Audio and select full processing
go back to audio and select conversion
tick 16 bit box
save wav file
then using besweet convert audio from wav to MP2
the way i do it is then to convert the avi video to mpeg2 using cce then re multiplex in Maestro (but thats just me)
Im not saying this is the right or the quickest way to do it.......it just works for me
Hope this helps

thanks, both methods seem fine.
up until the authoring process.
after multiplexing the sound and video together (TMpgEnc) i end up with my rather large Mpeg-2, which plays fine in windows media player.
But after authoring (Ulead DVD Workshop) to a folder, then burining in Nero, the DVD doesn't have sound, the picture is great but no sound at all.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Ok,
Dont multiplex the files back together. Use Maestro and let it sort out the multiplexing.
the no sound thing you have at the moment looks like something to do with the authoring software. I take it you encoded your sound to 48Khz for DVD

ok, i used Maestro to make my second DVD, with M2v video and Mp2 sound, made the dvd fine, tested it in my CPU dvd player and power dvd - it was great, tried in my toshiba standalone - no sound again.
Is there any way i can test the sound to see if it is DVD Complient while still in the VObs?
Thanks for your patience BodMan

Hmm have you tried using Powerdvd or another software dvd player and opening the vobs from your hard disk.
