How do I make widescreen?

Does anyone know of or how to make mpgs into widescreen but not loose any picture size. I know you can add black bands in TMPG and also in Panasonic encoder...but I want to make my mpg or my m2v into widescreen format...anyone know how to do this...it can be done as I have some VCDs that are done this way. There has to be a way to do it if it is being done allready.

Are you asking how to make a 4:3 into a widescreen? You can't get more picture than was originally encoded onto the disc?!? All you can do is add borders.

SO there is no software out there that will take an mpg or m2v and resize it to be widescreen or letterbox...why couldn't there be a template to just insert the video file like you would in a video post card...I have saw some inexpensive programs take full screen video and resize it to fit in a smaller window for video post cards...example media browser 2000 by arcsoft. What it does is take your video , resize it and play it in a windowed picture , for instance on a picture of an office desk with your video playing on the computer monitor on the desk in the picture. Any body want to write one if its not availiable...how about an Adobe Priemere plugin? I'm sure someone could easly write it.

most likely not without stretching the video horizontally, or cutting off 1/3 of the video

you could (this is kind of ludicrous) crop 120 vertical pixels of the video with AVIsynth, and add 120 pixels of border (60 on top, 60 on bottom) to make it look like a widescreen movie.

but unlike actualy widescreen SVCDs, you'd be missing out on some of the video rather than gaining. just leave it @ 4:3 i'de say. if the dvd has 16:9 you could re-rip it.

but really, no matter what you do (if you're resizing/cropping/just adding borders) your final video will look shabby due to stretching or missing some of the video to make room for useless borders
