Hi all,
I wasn't sure in which forum to put this and perhaps you all already know about this, but it was the first time that i heard this and i sure was exited about this.
I spoke to a product manager from Pioneer (optical media division) today (i work for a computer magazine) and he told me the following:
1) Pioneer will be releasing a DVD writer in november which is capable of burning at 4x speed. He did not give me any price indication, but he told me that he would be able to send me a drive for test somewhere in september.
2) When i spoke to him about the prices for Pioneer media, the told me that there were some hefty changes coming. Apparently a few very large asian manufacturers (who have ignored DVD-R media up untill now) are starting up production lines for DVD-R media, which should result in an overcapacity by the beginning of next year, which in turn will lead to a price war as we have seen with cd-r media. He said that the company analysts think that a enduser price of about 1 Euro for a real Pioneer DVD-R media will be a reality before the middle of next year.
I don't know about you all, but this sounds like music to my ears. We can stop messing around with all those cheap media and burn at 2x or even 4x speed with brands like Pioneer / Maxwel / Verbatim for less then we pay for cheap media today...
Let's keep our fingers crossed.
