Is ReMpeg2 optimized for Ntsc?

I have noticed after recoding a few different Pal & Ntsc titles that Pal takes almost twice as long!Several people are complaining about the time reencoding takes-maybe most are in Pal areas?I get on average 180 ms average time/picture on Ntsc and 345 ms on Pal with the exact same settings.That corresponds to approx 8 hrs for a 2 hour Ntsc and 16 hours for a similar length Pal movie and my computer is not that fast(1ghz/256mb).

What was the output resolution setting? If there was any resizing done on one and not the other this could account for a lot of overhead.

The output is the same as input 720x576 for Pal & 720x480 for Ntsc,no resize allother settings the same.I'm doing another Pal right now and the average time/picture is 340ms.Ntsc is always under 200ms.

is the NTSC source 24fps FILM, or 29.97fps?

generally the same amount of bandwidth is used /second of NTSC v PAL, the difference in frame rate is bascially offset by the difference in frame size, but in 24fps NTSC, the framerate is lower than PAL, and the frame size is smaller to, so there is less work to be done. (pulldown in the m2v is just flags).

Ntsc source is 29.97fps,i've done AI,Rat race,Miss Congeniality,Ocean's 11 and Training Day Ntsc and ALL encoded twice as fast as 25fps Pal of wich i did Taxi 1 and 2,Livvakterna,Noll Tolerans,Den Basta Sommaren and Dubbel8(last 4 are Swedish movies).It's not a marginal difference,it's dramatic.I'm very happy since i live in region 1 so 99% of my backups are Ntsc and like the old days of divx encoding they are done overnight while sleeping.

most new release movies (and movies released new in the last few years) are 24fps on the disc, so it is of course going to encode faster than the 25fps PAL (less frames and frame sizes).
