I would like to make this thread a survey for 2 things:

1) Best compression process to fit both hour and 1/2 TV shows onto a single DVD-R. How many have you fit without losing quality and how.

2) Your experiences with quality of re-encodes of VOB MPEG-2 files and what the best process is for good quality.

I am curious if there is that much of a difference in quality of captures from re-encoding versus encoding the original source AVI and if we can re-encode can we fit the same 4 episodes from a dual-layer onto a DVD-R without losing much quality.

If from your experience you have found it is just not possible to re-encode the TV shows to a single DVD and keep good quality, then let us know.

I am going to start re-encoding some DVD MPEG2 VOB files from DVDs and some MPEG2 files that I created with CCE in the past. I will post my results here.

I am thinking of using DVD2AVI and CCE 3000 3pass VBR (3000avag, 2100min, 6400max, noise6). Most of the material is TV shows like ER, Star Trek TNG, and Seinfeld (From my TV Captures). So not too much action, although X-files has many dark/night type scenes which may not encode too well at low bit rates. I want to keep it simple - just drag and encode. However, I know there is another way where you can tweak the encode by looking at graphs (Robshot method), but this is time consuming and since my material is not movies than I don't think it will make that much of a difference. But convince me differently if from experience you find the Robshot method much better and a noticable difference.

I am mostly concerned about easily noticable artifacts (blockiness). I don't mind if it is only noticable to a trained eye or via the slow motion button.

Example posts to this survey should look like:

Material: X-Files and Friends
Source: DVD VOB
Length: 44:10
Process: DVD2AVI, CCE Robshot method, 3500 average
Results: Excellent, can't tell difference from original
Video Size: 900,414 KB
Audio Size: AC3 at 256k = 62,506 KB
Combined: About 955-970 KB on the average
Disc Notes: Able to fit 4 X-files episides on one DVD

Material: Star Trek: TNG - Season 1, Disc 4
Source: DVD VOB
Length: 44:10
Process: DVD2AVI, CCE 3000 3pass VBR (3000avag, 2100min, 6400max, noise6)
Results: 3000 looks good to me, but dark scenes blocky, might try 3200 next
Video Size: 900,414 KB
Audio Size: Original AC3 from DVD = 144,525 KB
Combined: About 1.2 GB on the average
Disc Notes: Able to fit 3 TNG episides on one DVD

NOTE: File sizes should either be indicated in both MB/GB and bytes or just indicates the bytes since these are usually the larger size. The bytes is the numbers in the parens () when you right click properties on files. Combined size is AC3 audio + video.

Are you sure this is the right forum for this? What part does IfoEdit play in this?
