i have a pioneer dv-515 dvd player and have been trying for the past 2 weeks to get a copied dvd to play on it. the vcdhelp.com compatability list says that this player can handle dvdr's but i've yet to make this a reality.
you name it i've tried it, sometimes i've spent around 10hrs ( no joke ) infront of the pc trying to make a workable copy. i've purchased nero, primo dvd and recordnow max. i've tried different types of media traxdata, fws, datasafe, pioneer, tdk ( ranging from £1.35 per disk to £14.99 ). i've done my research tried all the relevant programmes and copying methods flawlessly, STILL NO SUCCESS.
however, every dvd that i've made works flawlessly on my sister's goodmans dvd player.
therefore, if u can't get a dvdr to work on your standalone player, and you know that you're doing everything right to copy your dvd's, save yourself a lot of time and money and buy a new dvd player that you know plays dvdr's.
i've driven myself crazy trying to get my pioneer to work all because some compatability list said that it could. so good buy pioneer and hello something else ( haven't made my mind up yet but it'll have to be cheap because i've spent all my money on programmes and dvdr media ).

Well said! Just go out and get a new DVD player that plays DVD-R's.
Not worth the hassle of trying to see if it works on the older ones.
I took my DVD-R to a Good guys and Circut City and tested it on the newer DVD players they had. It seemed to play on about 50% of the players I tried.
I'm leaning towards the Toshiba SD-4800.

i think i am going for the antec ad1100wb ( i think this is waht it is called ). anyone out there know if this is okay from first-hand experience?
its cheap, only £74.99 and isn't exactl aestetically pleasing but who cares as long as it does the job. i'm sorry to see my pioneer go, it was a great player in its time and cost me an arm and a leg. but these newer, cheaper players have probably technologically superceded it a long time ago.

Sure, but I would not change my Sony DVP-S 715 PAL for a Tokai or something low quality like that. Do not forget there is a mpeg2 decoder in it and lots of other things which directly do on video and sound quality.
Going on a dvd player which can read dvdr but with a crappy quality isn't a point for me.
On a good quality, not too expensive device, i would suggest PAL pioneer 444, which can be found, Zone free-ed, at 300 euros (or USD, it's the same now hehehe)
Still, no flame, just my piece of 2 cents, not an universal truth.

This model has been on the market for over 3 yrs. (well before DVD-R burners became all the rage).
It would suprise me if it was possible to play DVD-R to be honest. One point, have you tried making a disc image before burning to DVD ? That little trick has worked for me once or twice where my settop (Pioneer 444) would not play otherwise.
If you are still intent on getting a new DVD player, checkout this web site :- www.lynxdv.com
They are about to release a new model. (can't remember the name, but it replaces the yel 800, which was regarded as very good)
The site is highly respected and recommended in the world of DV video. (checkout threads at www.computervideo.net

i have tried to make an image and then burn it to disc using recordnow max. to be honest, the pioneer player does start playing the disc and after about 5 mins pixelation, sound distortion and freezing occurs. i haven't successfully managed to get any dvdr to play for more than 5-8 mins max. if i use the same disc on my sisters machine then, SURPRISE, it plays perfectly all the way through.
obviously making an image first is the best way to put a movie onto dvdr but i seriously doubt that i'll find a way to get my pioneer to work properly.
as has been said it probably is JUST TOOOOO OLD!!!!!!
i've yet to try the disc image using a more expensive brand of DVDR but i think i'll pass because i can't see how this will be cost effective.

Yo Master.....
I've had great results with DVDPro media purchased from the same place you linked to.
Love that free shipping. You can get 'em to burn at 2x? How?...with the software you listed? Have you made coasters at 2x with DVDPro's?
I need to try that software, but I've had good results with Nero 5.5.9

I own a pioneer DVD player too and it's very difficult to DVD-R even when i burn them with recordnowmax because it accepts them but sometimes shows an error anytime. So i recommend keep the pioneer and earn some money to buy a daewoo 5800!

the pioneer works fine now that i've adopted gear pro. also i've started using datasafe media which has a very light purple underside compared to the deep purple that you find on most dvdr's. on commercial dvd's you find that their bases are silver much like cd's. i wonder if the colour has something to do with playability?

I have been using Datasafe Generation 3 discs (White Top) for some months now. I have found them to be very reliable (and the price has dropped a lot in the past few weeks).
Check out these 2 sites for a few details (one is currently out of stock. Perhaps that speaks for itself on their popularity.

I have bought from both these sites, and found their service to be first class.
I have had the discs play on 5 different players, (friends and family) all have played, the only problem I've had reported, is one movie started to jump at chapter 19. However it plays fine on my Pioneer 444.
