is it better to use 640x480 or 512x384? they have the same aspect ratio but one would be bigger than the other. which one would get me a higher quality picture?

it depends on the bitrate. with very high video bitware (i'd say more than 1500-200 kbps), 640x480 will give u a better quality, but for practical reasons (i.e. if you wanna fit a movie into one or 2 cd's) 512x384 would prob give u a better quality.
of course, the best solution would be to try them both abd decide for yourself who looks better in YOUR eyes.
anoher solution would be to use gknot to do a compressibility test, and the one that will give u the higher value would be better.
it IS possible that a smaller resolution (than the 2 u mentioned) will give you an even better quality.

I use 500 sth*whatever.
It usually fits in 1 cd and I don't see the borders of the macroblocks while on full screen mode.
