avi questions

Hi,

I have downloaded some video files from the net and many of them are avi.

I am unable to play the avi files; all I get is audio and no video. I encountered a message saying something about not having the proper compressor or decompressor (?). What do I need to get to play the avi files correctly?

I also would like to burn these avi files onto a VCD but TMPG doesn't accept them. Do I have to convert the avi files to MPEG first? If so, how do I do that?

for playback only, it's most probbaly that if you install ffdshow (http://sf.net/projects/ffdshow) they will be playable.

to encode in vcd, you'll have to read the guides. if the file is playable, you'll be able to use the direct show input in tmpegenc to read the file.
