Which aspect ratio to use?

I've just got my copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

When I ripped it with SmartRipper, it reported that the aspect ratio was 16:9, whereas in DVD2AVI, it reports that it's 4:3.

Also, I noticed this on the DVD packaging: STANDARD VERSION This film has been modified as follows from its original version: It has been formatted to fit your screen. PAN & SCAN TRANSFER.

I tried playing back the movie on my computer, and it appears to be full screen without black bars on the bottom and top of the screen.

Which setting should I use? Thanks.

In my experience DVD2AVI is usually correct about aspect ratio, unlike SmartRipper. So I'd go with 4:3.

In my opinion, you got the "wrong" one. According to Harry Potter on IMDB (http://us.imdb.com/DVD?0241527) there are 2 different DVD versions of it out there. Yours cuts off the sides and is way harder to compress. I'd try and return it for the Anamorphic Widescreen version if I were you. And, as Acaila said, trust DVD2AVI over Smart Ripper-yours is 4:3.
