Pulldown problem

I have this pulldown problem and it doesn't seem to work when I use it. I created a DVD2AVI project with Forcefilm enabled and used the VFAPI converter to create an AVI file that CCE could read. Then I encoded an MPEG-2 DVD video file and used the pulldown.exe so that the player will play it back at 29.97 fps. I used Ulead DVD Movie Factory to burn the DVD but when i play the dvd, the video doesn't play properly. Its seems to jump back a few frames, then plays and jumps back again. Does anyone know why it does this? Or did i do something wrong? All i did was go to the command line and typed: pulldown movie.m2v output.m2v.

I've also encoded the movie at 29.97 fps and it plays a lot smoother but i read somewhere that encoding at 23.976 fps gives better quality.

If the source is FILM in the DVD2AVI window, then you have done the right thing by using the ForceFILM and encoding in CCE (make sure you turn on the Progressive option) and doing a Pulldown.

I had a similar phenomenon once: I ripped Unbreakable in it's entirety (as complete VOB files) and then encoded it and found that the it jumped back every few frames. (sounds like your issue)

The problem was this: Unbreakable has credits in English, Spanish and French and throughtout the movie whereever there was text, there were additional angles of that few seconds of film which contained the extra text. When viewing it on the set-top it would flip seamlessly to the correct angle and you wouldnt notice but they were all coming up in my version.

I used IFOedit to strip out all Angles except Angle1 and then re-encoded it and it worked fine.

Not sure if that's your problem, but you may want to look into the angle structure of the film to see if you have more than one.

In my understanding, DVD Movie-Factory doesn't work with pulldown material. It will not detect the 23.976 pulldown frame rate, but will treat it as 29.970 frame rate, so all of your frame numbering will be off by %20.

I found this out quickly when trying to use MF to make menus with my SVCD pulldown material. When I tried to select the frames for the menu thumbnails, the frame number MF used was off by %20. I went ahead and burnt it, and because MF remultiplexes the stream my SVCD stuttered like you describe.

I finally had to use VCDEasy. For a DVD I believe you can use Maestro,and Scenarist, spruce-up. I'm not familiar with any others
that accept pulldown video. Someone else may know more...

I don't use Ulead DVD Factory but I can give you some clues anyway.

So you have burned the DVD and it jumps in your home DVD player, or in your computer player ?

If it jumps in your home dvd player, it probably means that you have used a cheap media. This happens often to me. If you have a dvd in your computer, just try it in there and see if the same happens.. Usually, cheap medias works okay in computer dvd players.

Another tip, if you begin in this wonderful world, I recommend you to use a DVD ReWritable to avoid $$$ spending :)

Also another one, try to use another program to burn your DVD .. I know you can create an image with DVD Movie Factory, but I am not sure with which dvd burning software this image is compatible.

Maybe buddies in there could give you more informations that I have did :)

sounds like wrong field order. You have to either set the tff to odd or even.

Just take the m2v file you burnt and do this:
pulldown old.m2v new.m2v -nopulldown -tff odd

If that doesn't work try 'even' instead of 'odd'. And you should use dvd-rw to test it.

ps. the 'nopulldown' flag is for m2v files that are 29.97 fps already or pulldown has already been used on the file.
