View Full Version : Trouble ripping .vob files

I have ripped 4 or 5 movies so far without any problem. Today I tried to rip a movie and the process hangs up ripping the first .vob file. This is even on a movie that correctly ripped the other day.
I unistalled DVD2SVCD, restarted the machine, and reinstalled DVD2SVCD. This did not resolve the problem. I next tried to use VStrip to do the ripping and that didn't work either.
I have verified that the DVD's work by viewing them through PowerDVD.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Have you made any hardware/OS changes since it worked? Something had to go wrong between the times, since now it doesn't work when it did recently. Reverse any changes (undo windows settings changes, remove a new stick of ram you may have put in, etc.) to get back to the way it was when it worked. If that doesn't help, backup all your vital files, and reinstall Windows.

I have had a similar experience with previously rippable dvd's. Provided that there were no changes made to your computer (hardware or software), the only remaining suspects are the dvd itself and the dvd-rom drive. I have observed that almost all dvd's, cd-r's, etc. play perfect even though the recorded side shows fine scratches, smudges, or fingerprints. In some cases, however, they do not. This is what happened to me several times with dvd's. In some cases they looked perfectly clean, but still would not rip. I took note at which point the rip stalled and when played in a dvd player I found that at that point something was observable on my tv screen. Sometimes it was just a small glitch in the audio/video and one time it actually frooze at that point. I had to skip to the next chapter in order to watch the rest of the movie. In every case, after cleaning the dvd, I was able to successfully rip. I hope that this is your problem. If not, then the advice given in the previous post is the only possible remedy. Even though you might think that nothing has been changed in your software, a system file could have been corrupted. Reloading the os would then fix that. GOOD LUCK

If you've ripped successfully before and encoded and made an svcd then usually it's the dvd itself. Try another dvd then come back to it.
I kept getting CCE errors like 3 or 4 times with 'Shallow Hal'. I was going thru the roof. I used another copy of that dvd-rom shallow hal and voila...no problems. Even though the first copy ripped 100% ok it must've had some errors to create the problem since I used the same parameters on both dvds and used internal routines each and every time.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
I think that I have isolated the problem to the DVD-ROM drive. Here is what I did:
I had 4 dvd's which had previously ripped without any problem. Two of the dvd's (Chasing Amy and Office Space) now are unable to be ripped at all. What happens is that the first .vob file does not even begin to rip and the program stops responding. I cleaned both of the dvd's and tried to rip them again. After the second attempt failed, I tried the other two dvd's (Memento and Harry Potter) and they ripped without any problem.
Then, I loaded DVD2SVCD onto the laptop and and I was able to rip Chasing Amy and Office Space without any problem.
So, I'm thinking there is something wrong with the drive. Does that seem to be a logical conclusion?
Anyway, Dell is sending a new drive since it is within the 30 day defective return window. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

I am having the exact same problem. I was able to rip dvd' fine on my system. Then I formatted my main HD, added 3 more hd's, put on a clean install of win2k. Now i get this problem, it is driving me nuts. But now i figured it out. Once i opened the DVD with Windvd first, then closed windvd, then tried to rip it, the problem no longer occured. You need to "authenticate it" first =).

Well, I received my replacement DVD drive from Dell (Lite-On LTD 163) and I am now able to rip the discs that I prevoiusly could not without any problem.
ssstonebraker - It is possible that I also would "authenticate" a DVD with PowerDVD before ripping the disc. And then, when I began having problems ripping, I would just insert a disc to see if I could rip it without running PowerDVD.
Who knows - everything seems to be fine now.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
