resolution and bits/pix higher/lower? [Archive]

Is it better to have a lower resolution for the movie like 576X288 with a bits/pix of .17 or have a resolution of 704Xsomthing with a bits/pix of .129 . just wondering if it makes much difference. This is for a 1cd rip using divx5.02

Short answer: YES ;)

Seriously, a smaller resolution means that you can encode the picture more precise, therefor less blocky and sharper, on the other hand you loose detail. For a larger resolution the opposite is of course true, it is likely to have more blocks, there will be more details in the picture but the will be slightly blurrier.
Why don't you make a compression test? Find a resolution that gives a result between 60% and 80% and use that. Values assuming B-frames enabled and higher is of course better.
