DVD-->>MPEG4 :: Quicktime 6 is the best

Hi!

Hasn't anybody noticed this yet? Quicktime 6 Pro can be used to transcode your ripped DVD files into state of the art mpeg4 video. All you need is the Mpeg2-Playback-Component (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/mpeg2playback/) which Apple sells through its Internet-Store.

It seems that the whole scene hasn't realized that up to now. I ask myself why? Quicktime 6 Pro incorporates the best mpeg4 encoder ever. There is nothing else which achieves the same quality level while keeping strict mpeg4 standard compliance.

<Edit> Glad, that nobody swallowed it. What's this Apple MPEG-4 thing, "open standards, not like Microsoft, bla bla..." about here anyway. That implementation ist totally unusable and even blocking the installation of better MPEG-4 codecs. </Edit>

You're kidding, right? We should all chuck our hi-quality DivX 5.02/XviD/SBC methods out the window and give in to Quicktime 6's n00b 1-pass simple profile encoder?

I agree with neo_sapien, because the QT6 encoder sucks donkey balls - even at the *maximum* bitrate of 2048 kbps it still looks like crap. Try it yourself!

I do belive thats the best sales pitch I've seen in these forums, but you can bet nobody's buyin!

Hmmmmmmmm. If only there were Divx or Xvid for quicktime. If only..... Any programmers with quicktime experience or willingness to try? The basis for an all in one very noob friendly encoding setup! Not much to look at yet. But it could be eventually.

You can actually put both XviD and DivX in a mp4 container and play back in QT6. All you need is mp4creator from www.mpeg4ip.net

There are some quirks though. You can't use b-frames, qmc, qpel because QT6 doesn't support that.

QT6 is a ISMA profile 0 player and encoder with support for certain ISMA Profile 1 featues. Those include larger video size, but not b-frames and so on. A player can only be compliant with ISMA profile 1 if it supports all features in ISMA Profile 1.

This info can be found in the QT6 developers pdf: The current release of QuickTime 6 includes only the MPEG-4 simple video compressor. Higher quality and lower bitrates can be expected from the advanced video compressor.

We have known this for a long time. What I was reffering to was versions of Divx and Xvid that were tailored to work for Quicktime. As in not VFW or WDM. So we could use quicktimes MP4 capabilities but not their MPEG4 codec. :)
